Wouldn’t You Though?
Step into Tooth & Claw on Brixham’s Middle Street (which is handily right next door to the fab cafe The Curious Kitchen) and you’ll find a design and lifestyle boutique that wouldn’t look out of place in a trendy part of London. On display are a curated selection of vintage pieces and antique home accessories, along with designer candles from Bella Freud and True Grace, and retro artworks (including a mini David Bowie exhibition when I visited). It’s the kind of store where you want to touch, smell and study everything in close-up detail.
So why the London feel to this cool little find in a fishing town on the south coast? Meet co-owner Andrea and it all begins to make sense. Previously working in management for the likes of Agent Provocateur, Tom Dixon, Nicole Fahri and Vivienne Westwood, there’s a touch of the flame-haired Queen of British fashion about Andrea too.
She and her husband Jamie (he’s a print designer) combined skills and relocated to Devon to set up something completely new to this part of the world. Andrea says that their love of fashion, music, art and film inform everything they do – and that includes designing their own sultry range of wallpaper and cushions.
You can flick through a book of designs in the store of what they describe as glamorous, sophisticated and rock’n’ roll-looking wallpaper: LuxeNoir, they call it. Inspired by Westwood, Andrea is a champion of British industry and so all of the original designs and products are manufactured in Britain…while being sold in boutiques in Europe, New York and, err, Brixham.
The good news is that you don’t have to schlepp all the way to Devon to indulge (although why you wouldn’t want to, quite frankly, is beyond me). Just take a looksie at their online boutique the next time you’re in the market for an interiors overhaul. Art, drama, come meet that boring wall.
