<p>Something new to titillate your tastebuds, and formerly open only to overnight guests at Fowlescombe Farm&#8217;s retreat. Also new is executive chef Elly Wentworth (formerly The Angel), who&#8217;s now creating The Refectory&#8217;s nightly sharing menu. It&#8217;s all imaginative and produce-led, drawing on the organic and foraged crops of the 450-acre estate. One of those rustic but rather exclusive experiences that&#8217;s right up Muddy&#8217;s street. You can also do foraging courses, bread and making classes and floristry &#8211; and yoga &#8211; classes in the greenhouse. </p>

<p>With Ian Alexander and head chef Sean Blood at the helm (formerly Soho House Berlin and Shoreditch), Sandridge Barton vineyard&#8217;s new farm-to-fork eatery is serving up exciting Basque-inspired dishes and using super-local meat and seasonal veg from the estate and gardens. It’s currently open for lunch seven days a week, with plans for evening pop-ups.</p>

<p>Part of North Devon&#8217;s swoon-worthy stay, The Collective at Woolsery, The Farmers Arms marries the talents of head chef Toby Neal with those of innovative head gardener Josh Sparkes. Josh manages The Collective&#8217;s own Birch Farm: 150 organic acres which feed the restaurant and stock the shop shelves with meat, salad and veggies, and which recently lured BBC Gardeners’ World to film here. Together the pair create and ever-changing seasonal Birch Farm Menu, showcasing the ingredients foraged from just up the lane. Whet your appetite with a tour of the farm.</p>

<p>A real farm-to-table dining experience, Darts Farm’s newest eatery is all about taking food from the farm and into the fire, celebrating the simplicity of beautiful ingredients grown, reared, caught and crafted right on their doorstep. The menu changes regularly to reflect the seasons using what is bountiful in the fields, and if it’s not from their own farm it’s from their vibrant community of like-minded artisan food producers, farmers and fishermen who share their passion for seasonality and sustainability. <p>Not content to stop at a grape harvest, here they source much of the produce on the menu fresh from their kitchen gardens. Thanks to their plentiful orchards they also grow a huge range of their own nuts, apples and soft fruits. Go for afternoon tea, Sunday lunch or book a vineyard tour (until end October) for a tasting of their award-winning wine.</p>

<p>As you&#8217;d expect, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall&#8217;s daytime café menu channels the TV chef&#8217;s long-term foodie passions, like home grown organic food, but also newer ones – eating less meat to save the planet, sustainable fish, and healthy eating (he’s lost a reputed 75kg since filming&nbsp;<em>Britain’s Fat Fight</em>&nbsp;in 2019) and in 2021 published&nbsp;<em>Eat Better Forever: 7 Ways to Transform Your Diet</em>. <p>How do they offer such incredibly tasty, local and homemade vittles at such good value, I do not know. Here is legendary for its Sunday lunches and proper Devon cream teas (with homemade raspberry jam). A real go-to for dog-walkers just off Haytor on Dartmoor, parents with young kids on rainy days (they have farm animals and an undercover barn with mini tractors to ride) and extended families looking for a meet-up.</p>

<p>Located in a beautifully converted grain barn, and serving up a daytime menu using organic produce from the farm, it’s a mostly modern veggie menu along with a a few tasty meat dishes using produce from owner John’s smallholding. Think Riverford-style brunch and lunch, such as harissa squash or sausages with skordalia (Turkish potatoes) and braised greens, washed down with homemade cordials and local Heron Valley soft drinks. You’ll also find a small farm shop where you can buy John’s homemade sourdough, local Challans Combe milk and a packaging-free range to pop in your rucksack.</p>

<p>The Gather chefs create show-stopping dishes using locally sourced and wild foraged ingredients &#8216;from the fields, shoreline, rivers and hedgerows&#8217;. Don&#8217;t be fooled by the canteen vibe &#8211; this is a fine dining experience, but without the fuss or the price tag. </p>
