<p>Artisan bakery <a href="https://thedailyknead.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Daily Knead </a>(let’s take a moment to appreciate the genius naming) is a kitsch addition to the Totnes foodie scene, sandwiched between China Blue and Majestic Wines on Station Road.&nbsp;What started as a local foodie&#8217;s quest for the perfect almond croissant has led to a hotspot for daily pastries, delicious coffees and fresh bread made in small batches under passionate self-taught Head Baker, David (second row, centre above).&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h2>

<p>The striking purple and burgundy signage is enough to entice the inquisitive to take a peek inside, and the interior certainly does not disappoint. Think warm, modern rustic with a contemporary edge; the space is inviting, calm and thoughtfully curated. </p>

<p>Natural materials dominate with raw timber paneling, wooden shelves and exposed brickwork which is right up my strasse. The pastries on display in the huge cabinet are a feast for the eyes making this a place to linger rather than rush. But, given its size, there&#8217;s only room for one bar table and a few chairs, so grab them if you can and enjoy watching the bakers at work in the open kitchen.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoff-amp-quaff">SCOFF &amp; QUAFF</h2>

<p>I’m a latte and pain au choc creature of habit, but I ordered a selection of six to try. Overkill? Possibly. But how else could I possible share a balanced opinion, right? </p>

<p>Their best-selling brown sugar and almond croissant is king here so it’s safe to say they’ve nailed their own brief. That said, they bake the classics &#8211; croissant, pain au chocolat (yes I tried it  and yes it was delicious) almond croissant and cinnamon buns daily &#8211; as well as filled danish pastries which are their signature bakes. On the first Saturday of the month they also have a Donut Day!</p>

<p>The maple glazed apple and cinnamon bun was up there for me and the lardy cake a surprise hit, which David told me was a nod to his nan who introduced him to the wonders of a bakery as a child and which inspired him to take up the craft.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Artisanal bread is baked daily so I sampled their gluten-free loaf, which, having been GF in the past, I can say with certainty was one of the best I’ve tried. </p>

<p>There are no GF offerings pastry-wise, but they do often bake GF cookies and brownies, and there were vegan and GF Ferrero Rocher energy balls available.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As well as your classic hot bevs, various cocoa percentage hot chocolate is available which was a nice touch, and soft drinks by HipPop and locally made Luscombe are on sale.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Some local produce is available to buy including Crankhouse coffee from Exeter, Kingsteignton based Barbers Hot Chocolate and Plant Prana nut butters that are also made on site.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kid-friendly">KID-FRIENDLY?</h2>



<p>There is nothing unfriendly for kids here, but as there&#8217;s limited seating, a family with children would be better off ordering and taking their treats for a sit-down in <a href="https://www.china-blue.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">China Blue</a> next door.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-accessibility">ACCESSIBILITY</h2>



<p>A wheelchair would have no problem with access, but as the space inside is fairly small and the seating slightly raised, sitting in for your delicious treats may not be that enticing, so ditto re the China Blue option. Deffo perfect for a grab-and-go though.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dog-friendly">DOG-FRIENDLY?</h2>



<p>Yes, absolutely. Complimentary doggie treats available and a bowl of water for thirsty pooches.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-anything-else">ANYTHING ELSE?</h2>

<p>Given that the space is limited for seating it’s an absolute win that you can order from here and take your goodies next door to China Blue. If you plan ahead you can book in for pottery painting or just enjoy a nosy around the shop once you’ve re-fulled.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They are not the birthday cake making kind of bakery, but do cater for large events such as weddings and when it comes to waste, often offer 50% off the last hour of opening, or donate to Totnes food bank.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>

<p>There’s a lot to love about this small but perfectly formed bakery. No, the bakes aren&#8217;t cheap, but they are genuinely delicious (but that&#8217;s local, quality provenance for you) and FYI are enormous, so you certainly get your money&#8217;s worth.&nbsp;One thing that really struck me was the age range of their customers, from teenagers to pensioners just over the hour that I spent there, so this place certainly has mass appeal in the town. The coffee is on point and I love how easy it is to get to, with parking right outside the front door. I only wish that I lived closer because I knead more of this place in my life.&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>Good for?</strong>A drive by take-away as this is very handily on the commuter route with parking right outside, or on your walk to the nearby Totnes train station.</p>



<p><strong>Not for?</strong> Mums looking to have a cosy catch up with their babies. The space is a bit tight for this kind of soirée.</p>



<p><strong>The Damage</strong>: Pastries were between £4 &#8211; £4.50 with the exception of Lardy Cake (£2.50). A Latte (£3.90) and my Henry &amp; Jones Chai (£4.10) meaning you could walk away with a tasty treat and something to wash it down with for just over £6.&nbsp;</p>
