Party Season Fashion
I've solved the seasons biggest dilemma: how to take an outfit from the office to the cocktail bar in a flash. Hint: it's easier than you think.
Let’s face it, the trad Christmas party seems to be on the wane (simultaneous *sob* and *hurrah*). These days, the season is less about the annual stiff, formal dinner and dance ‘do, with the frock and hair to match (thanks to a gallon of hairspray); instead it’s more about relaxed get-togethers after work, making it altogether comfier and easier to get straight to the fun.
But that leaves us girls with a bit of a fashion dilemma: how to quickly switch up a work outfit into something that still looks and makes us feel glam?
The answer, I’ve discovered, lies in a bit of clever styling and a shop that gets the need for understated glamour. Ears burning, Lorna Ruby? They should be, I’m talking about you. This lifestyle concept store in Exeter has totally nailed the simple and minimal aesthetic, from its pared back jewellery, to its easily adaptable daywear.
I asked the store’s super-lovely owner Lorna to show us how we can do it, by suggesting a few key pieces that totally prove her point. Look and learn, Muddies, look and learn and you’ll be first to the free bar in no time.
Pick a relaxed top with a luxe look
A top that manages to be both ultra-glam and effortless is a winner. This sequin-adorned tee fits the bill, with an easy cropped shape and a drapey fit. Shimmer your way around the office teamed with simple black trousers or jeans and then all you need to do is take your make-up from day to night and you’re good to go.
Let a statement dress do the hard work
Leopard print will do it every time, but we love the fit of this dress, with its dropped waist and pockets. Tights, ankle boots and a slouchy knit will work for the day, ready to be unleashed come party-time.
Or dress up something more understated
This little black number is perfect for the day teamed with flats, or trainers and the frills make it easy to dress up and accessorise for parties.
Slouch and shimmer
This outfit pretty much nails the day-to-night dilemma. Coppery, shimmery shades? Check. Comfy style? Check. Little bit different? Ooh, yes. You’ll be able to throw some serious shapes on the dance floor in this one, if (sorry, when) things take a turn for the more raucous.
Let feet do the talking
Shoes can make an outfit. A low block heel in a luxe fabric, or a statement pair of trainers will both do the job of taking a work look through to party animal.
Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise
Oldest trick in the book, but it works, so who cares? Whether you need a pop of colour to make black more interesting, a glam pair of earrings or a bag to add some style, accessories can be the key to transforming a look in an instant.
