<p>Quite literally hidden away in the South Devon countryside, Dittisham Hideaway does exactly what it says on the tin. Reached via winding country lanes and nestled in a private woodland valley, this luxury glamping spot serves up bouji treehouses, cosy Shepherd&#8217;s Huts and even a vintage American Airstream, all ripe for relaxation mode on.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Just a mile from the water&#8217;s edge, outside the chocolate box village of Dittisham and only a 10-minute drive from the port town of Dartmouth, it’s perfectly positioned for exploring the South Hams without feeling remotely touristy. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h2>

<p>Off-grid, but make it luxe. Step away from the car and don’t look back. Disconnect from the daily grind and feel the shoulders drop as you take in the panoramic valley views. </p>



<p>We checked into ‘Oak’, one of five Shepherd&#8217;s Huts dotted across the wildflower meadow, each angled for uninterrupted valley views and maximum privacy. It’s giving ‘hands on the hips, taking it all in’ energy, and I live for that ‘can’t wait to see the room’ feeling. And these huts are the gift that keeps on giving. </p>



<p>My mini-me quickly got over the disappointment that no actual Shepherds reside here when she clocked our private wood-fired hot tub (note: allow up to three hours to heat, so get that bad boy fired up pronto) and a fire pit ready for marshmallow toasting. </p>

<p>Inside the space is cleverly designed and surprisingly roomy. You’ve got a fully equipped kitchen, a king-size bed, a lounge area with a pull-out sofa for kids, and a bathroom with a generous double walk-in shower. Rustic charm meets boutique hotel polish. </p>



<p>Family-run since December 2024, the new owners (parents themselves) have added thoughtful touches throughout and erected a woodland tipi hosting half-term activities. We joined a nature-themed craft session, making bird feeders and painting pottery before wandering back through the trees for sunset to swoon over. </p>

<p>Shoes off, matching PJs on and with each hut equipped with a traditional wood-burning stove and a basket of logs, we cranked that up and settled into peak cosy. Games, books, s’mores under the stars; the whole wholesome Pinterest board. </p>



<p>Once my little one was snoozing, I had a few blissful solo hours listening to the rain, watching the fire and reading my book in total peace. Bedtime. No sleep app needed; just crackling logs and the sound of the stream outside to lull me to sleep. This, my friends, is how you do lo-fi. </p>

<p>No need to haul the weekly shop with you. A welcome hamper awaits and it’s a good ‘un. Your hut is already stocked with oil, salt and pepper, sugar, proper Devonshire tea and Nespresso coffee pods (speaking my language) and the hamper includes milk, apple juice, butter, bread, crisps, cookies and hot chocolate sachets.</p>



<p>There is a BBQ on the terrace for fair weather feasting and additional hampers can be pre-ordered if you’d rather not lift a finger. Forgotten something? Sainsbury’s in Dartmouth is just 10 minutes away. Fancy a pub supper instead? The Ferry Boat Inn in Dittisham is less than a mile away and does a cracking watersider dinner. </p>

<p>WiFi is available in all accommodation (though you may prefer to embrace the digital detox). Electric wheelbarrows are on hand to help ferry luggage (genius) and there are EV charging points on site (£25 per charge).On-site activities include outdoor chess, ping pong, boules and woodland walks, plus the new tipi space hosting free seasonal events for guests. </p>

<p>The waterside village of Dittisham is an absolute must. Think boats bobbing, estuary views and old-school English charm. Grab lunch at Anchorside Cafe or the Ferry Boat Inn and from Easter you can hop on the ferry across to Greenway House, the former home of Agatha Christie. Just ring the bell for the ferry. Utterly delightful. </p>



<p>We also ventured to East Portlemouth (around 45 mins away) and stopped at Village Farm where my daughter joined a NatureMake workshop while I browsed the farm shop and treated myself to a top notch latte.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Had I been child free? I’d have skipped over to the recently opened sauna at The Old Stable Café with views overlooking Salcombe. Next time. </p>

<p>A big yes to both and they now stay for free. Doggos even get their own welcome pack: bed, bowls, treats, toy, blanket and poo bags. Less packing for you = immediate win. The website also lists some dog-friendly walks, eateries and beaches close by. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-accessibility">ACCESSIBILITY </h2>



<p>Sadly, not ideal for those with mobility issues due to steep gravel paths and woodland terrain, particularly accessing the treehouses.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



<p>Mini-breaks are my love language and this little belter filled my cup completely. One-on-one time with my daughter, hot tubs under the stars, marshmallows by the fire and drifting off to the sounds of nature. I was up at the crack to light the fire because… why not and I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed my morning coffee in front of it taking in the valley views. This stay ticked every box. Proper switch off territory. Would I go back? Try and stop me.&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>Good for:&nbsp;</strong>Screen free family breaks. Outdoorsy escapes with comfort. Peace, quiet and hot tubs. </p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong> Those with mobility issues.&nbsp;Anyone needing rock solid WiFi.&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>The Damage: </strong>Since taking over in Dec 2024, the new owners have significantly reduced prices, making this a very reasonable luxe escape.  Stays start from £250 for 2 nights in low season. Keep an eye on the website for special offers and their new weekend rate (Friday 4pm check in to Monday 10am check out)  All Shepherd&#8217;s Huts have a sofa bed so can accommodate 2 adults and up to 2 smaller children (recommended up to 8 yrs old) </p>
