<p>Arrive in Lynmouth and it&#8217;s hard not to be wowed by the giant water cannons making a splash outside Glen Lyn Gorge. But they&#8217;re just the teaser. Beyond them lies an engaging museum telling the story of the hydroelectric station that still powers the town, hands-on exhibits where little ones can generate electricity and fire the water cannons themselves, and, best of all, a beautiful Watersmeet-esque woodland gorge threaded with waterfalls and walking trails. It&#8217;s also where you&#8217;ll discover the moving story of Lynmouth&#8217;s devastating 1952 flood disaster.</p>

<p>Fancy bagging England&#8217;s highest manmade waterfall? Canonteign Falls is home to Lady Exmouth Falls, a spectacular 70m cascade reached via a steep climb that&#8217;s rewarded with glorious views across the Teign Valley. If you&#8217;d rather keep things gentler, follow the woodland trail to Clampitt Falls and the base of Lady Exmouth Falls instead. There are seven lakes to wander around, a children&#8217;s playground and café, making it an easy family day out. Every Thursday and Sunday at 10am, guided Waterfall History Walks reveal how Lady Exmouth employed local miners to create these dramatic waterfalls after the nearby mine closed. (£16.75 or £23.50 including a cream tea.)</p>

<p>Two leafy walks descend into Devon&#8217;s deepest gorge, where every step feels a little more Jurassic, thanks to dripping ferns, moss-covered rocks and the constant soundtrack of rushing water. One trail leads to the elegant 30m White Lady Waterfall; the other ends at the aptly named Devil&#8217;s Cauldron, where the river churns through a narrow rock cleft with a roar you&#8217;ll hear long before you see it.</p>



<p>The Instagram-worthy viewpoints at Devil&#8217;s Cauldron are reached via metal viewing platforms (not suitable for prams or anyone unsteady on their feet), but they&#8217;re guaranteed to get your heart racing. For National Trust teas and cake afterwards, park at the Devil&#8217;s Cauldron entrance and descend from there. Camera essential.</p>

<p>Hidden away on the wild Hartland Peninsula, Speke&#8217;s Mill Mouth is one of North Devon&#8217;s most dramatic natural waterfalls. It&#8217;s a gentle 25-minute walk from Hartland Quay before the 15m cascade tumbles onto the rocky shoreline below. But it&#8217;s not just about the waterfall. The shattered cliffs and folded rock formations here are the result of an ancient tectonic collision, creating some of the county&#8217;s most jaw-dropping coastal scenery. Finish with a well-earned pint at the Wrecker&#8217;s Retreat overlooking the waves. It&#8217;s not called the Shipwreck Coast for nothing.</p>

<p>Rain is your friend here. After a proper Devon downpour, Becky Falls absolutely thunders through its boulder-strewn valley, making this one of Dartmoor&#8217;s most impressive natural waterfalls. Carved out over thousands of years, the 70ft cascade crashes through enormous granite boulders before winding its way down the Bovey Valley. Alongside the waterfall you&#8217;ll find woodland walks, animal encounters (from pigs and ponies to skunks and meerkats), regular keeper talks, a café and plenty of picnic spots, making it an easy family day out.</p>

<p>Next time life gets a bit much, don&#8217;t book a spa – book a stay here instead. Hotel Endsleigh is the ultimate soul-soother, with tinkling waterfalls, birdsong and acres of emerald-green landscape to iron out even the most furrowed brow. Think Crème de la Mer, lemon posset and a week in the Med&#8230; without leaving Devon. Or simply stop by for afternoon tea and a wander through the glorious gardens.</p>



<p>Garden lovers shouldn&#8217;t miss the guided tour with head gardener Ben Ruscombe-King, who shares stories about the estate&#8217;s champion trees, hidden follies and the old brewhouse, where workers were once &#8220;paid&#8221; in ten pints of beer a day. Different times.</p>

<p>Designed by Humphry Repton, Capability Brown&#8217;s protégé, the gardens are the very definition of the Picturesque movement, where every view has been artfully composed to resemble a romantic landscape painting. Don&#8217;t miss the enchanting Shell House, decorated with shells, coral and conches around a mirror pool. Pure magic.</p>

<p>Starting in the magical Heddon Valley, this glorious Exmoor walk winds through ancient oak woodland before revealing Hollow Brook Waterfall tumbling dramatically down the steep-sided valley towards the sea. If you&#8217;ve got the legs, carry on to Woody Bay and the South West Coast Path for jaw-dropping views across the Bristol Channel towards Lundy Island (with Wales making a cameo on a clear day), before looping back through some of North Devon&#8217;s most spectacular scenery. Look out for the old lime kiln at Heddon&#8217;s Mouth and listen for peregrines and buzzards overhead. It&#8217;s the kind of walk that feels a world away from everyday life – all birdsong, babbling streams, moss-covered trees and boots that will almost certainly earn their muddy stripes..</p>

Ilfracombe Sea Safari&#8217;s two-hour Waterfall, Seal &amp; Exmoor Safari whisks you along one of Britain&#8217;s most spectacular stretches of coastline, where waterfalls tumble straight off Exmoor&#8217;s cliffs into the sea.
