<p>Further proof that Torquay is shaking off its unfair <em>Fawlty Towers</em> image &#8211; <a href="https://www.ihg.com/hotelindigo/hotels/gb/en/torbay/extto/hoteldetail" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hotel Indigo</a> has opened a swanky new 153-bedroom stay just steps from the seafront. It&#8217;s not just for the English Riviera views. After you&#8217;ve explored Torre Abbey, the beaches and bars, you can top up with a wellbeing fix in a state-of-the-art wellness suite, where you&#8217;ll also find rejuvenating treatment rooms and a sea-view fitness centre.</p>

<p>The hotel&#8217;s signature restaurant bistro, Root &amp; Reef, is capitalising on Torquay&#8217;s fishing and farming heritage, while the rooftop bar, Cast, is to set to open this spring. According to the press release, the name is a tribute to Torquay icon Agatha Christie and her crime novel &#8216;cast&#8217; and that you&#8217;ll &#8216;casting&#8217; your eyes over the Bay with a handcrafted cocktail in hand. </p>

<p><a href="https://topshambrewery.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Topsham Brewery</a>, the Exeter craft brewers known for flavourful small batch IPAs, stouts and lagers, are expanding from their Quayside location into the city centre. Their new bar is at the former Tabac, an iconic bar situated a short stumble from Exeter Central Station. Just as at their original taproom on the Quay, they&#8217;re promising a friendly vibe, a good variety of beers on tap, ciders and natural wines, plus a range of guest beers. Opening is scheduled for the end of Jan, once the refurb, which promises to retain the unique style of Tabac, is complete. Heading in? Why not combine it with some Asian comfort food from the new Wokwok on Sidwell Street?</p>

<p>Pass us a hot pasty and homemade scone! Award-winning farm shop, <a href="https://strawberryfieldslifton.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Strawberry Fields</a>, known for their marvellous Lifton store, eatery and PYO events, are expanding. They&#8217;re taking on the recently closed Dartmoor Diner, a well-known roadside pitstop for drivers, walkers and cyclists that sits just off the A386 between Plymouth and Yelverton. Word is it will be similar to their new outlet at Buckfastleigh &#8211; a small coffee shop with bakes, fresh produce and food-to-go, but whether it will have the useful E-charging is TBC.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s been a brutal start to the hospitality year with The Old Warehouse in Kingsbridge, Ben&#8217;s Farm Shop in Exeter&#8217;s St Leonards and Royal William Yard&#8217;s News Café all closing. Exeter Cathedral School Prep is also to close due to financial pressures. Sad for us, but good for them &#8211; The Exploding Bakery is shutting their Exeter city centre café to focus on their super-successful wholesale business. So, you&#8217;ll still find their delicious bakes about the place but just not by the station. </p>
