<p>Hands up who&#8217;s looking forward to seeing <em>The Roses </em>this August? Of course, we&#8217;re far too young *cough* to remember the 1980s comedy classic, <em>The War of the Roses</em>, but it&#8217;s both hands up here! The trailers look hilarious and Colman and Cumberbatch are the leads, nuff said. What&#8217;s more, Devon has starring role, putting our sunny South Hams firmly in the limelight. </p>

<p>Based on the Warren Adler novel, <em>The Roses</em> is directed by Jay Roach (<em>Bombshell</em>, <em>Meet the Parents</em>), and written by Tony McNamara (<em>Poor Things</em>, <em>The Great</em>). It stars some of Muddy&#8217;s favourite actors, including national treasures Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch, Kate McKinnon (Weird Barbie in <em>Barbie</em>), <em>Dr Who</em> star Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou of <em>Stath Lets Flats</em> fame and <em>I, Tanya</em>&#8216;s Allison Janney.</p>

<p>Colman and Cumberbatch play the leads as warring couple Ivy and Theo Rose. Things start well. They&#8217;re happily-married with a family and successful careers &#8211; she&#8217;s a chef and he&#8217;s an architect. But as the pressure-cooker of balancing work and family builds (y&#8217;know, like who&#8217;s de-nitting the kids and who&#8217;s networking over Champers) &#8211; plus a disaster which leads to a surprise reversal of bread-winning roles &#8211; their relationship implodes. Cue crabs in the bath, a dinner party from hell, the therapy session where you feel sorry for the therapist &#8211; and some absolutely brilliant banter. </p>

<p>Much of the filming took places in the States, but its filming locations echo the mix of the story&#8217;s transatlantic cast. Last June, Muddy brought <a href="https://devon.muddystilettos.co.uk/things-to-do/latest-news/new-restaurants-stores-devil-wears-prada-musical/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">news </a>that Colman and Cumberbatch had been spotted filming in Salcombe, known for its pristine estuary, boating and multimillion pound homes. Much of it was around North Sands beach and based at a popular seafood eatery, <a href="https://winkingprawn.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Winking Prawn</a>, which had been closed to the public and was sporting a brand-new sign.</p>

<p>We can reveal that the family-run eatery plays the location of Ivy&#8217;s crab shack, named <em>We&#8217;ve Got Crabs!</em> In a recent instagram post, director Jay Roach gave owner Lucy Culkin and her parents Jane Tyler and Mark Goodey an incredible shout-out. He shared how they&#8217;d spent months scouring the coasts of England to find the location in Salcombe, describing The Winking Prawn as &#8216;magical&#8217; and raving how inspiring he&#8217;d found the vibe of the place and the local community. Proud! <p>Theo and Ivy&#8217;s spectacular modernist home is not, as it appears, set in Northern California, but in Combe Martin in North Devon. Like the Roses&#8217; marriage, it&#8217;s perched on a cliff edge and full of symbolically fractured features, fragile stairs and a leaning tower of a bedroom. The pretty coastal village is known for its sheltered cove, famous rock pools and caves, and for having reputedly the longest village street front of over two miles. But while the exterior of the house was shot here, the interior was built on a soundstage at Pinewood Studios. We hear that when Colman first stepped into the house set, she said, &#8220;..architects all over the world are going to be jealous. It&#8217;s so beautiful.&#8221; Gotta love a bit of property porn!</p>

<p>In Berkshire, Ascot Racecourse doubles as an airport and also a restaurant kitchen. The lawyers&#8217; conference room, where Theo and Rose square up with the lawyers are set here too. Looking forward to watching Janney&#8217;s badass lawyer (and the badass pooch): &#8220;<em>We want everything, and he walks out of here with his face still attached. Right, Bruno?</em>&#8221; Woof! </p>
