<p>Watch out Barbican! Nearby Bretonside is fast becoming the new go-to, not just as Plymouth&#8217;s up-and-coming Gay Village but as a hotspot for foodies. Opposite cool cafe Minerva, who serve tacos and oysters, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/quinceplymouth/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Quince </a>has landed &#8211; the first go-it-alone 38-seater venue for the former head chef of award-winning Treby Arms, David Mann. </p>

<p>On the modern British European menu are unpretentious dishes like Brixham crab, duck, steak, vegan and g/f options, plus roasts on Sunday, all to be washed down with a selection of curated unusual European wines you may not have tried and cocktails. Good for date nights and drinks with the gals, although word is spreading so much, they&#8217;re already catering for larger groups too. Open Weds/Thurs evenings, Fri/Sat lunch and dinner and midday until 5pm on Sundays. Go grab a bite of Quince!</p>

<p>In spite of all the doom and gloom (including the sad closure of <a href="https://www.ringofbells.net" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Ring of Bells</a> at North Bovey) we&#8217;re chuffed to see recognition for <a href="https://lympstonemanor.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lympstone Manor</a>, the 5-star Michael Caines hotel near Exmouth which is the highest new entrant at number 5 in this year&#8217;s list of Top 50 Boutique Hotels. No wonder, with its Michelin-starred kitchen, 10-acre vineyard and cool new Pool House (above) which opened this summer. <a href="https://www.top50boutiquehotels.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Check out the full list of Top 50 Boutique Hotels here</a>. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Two new Rockfish restaurants coming in 2023</h2>

<p>I bumped into Mitch Tonks at the launch of Red Paddle&#8217;s new <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzKo-bH-oVU" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">3-in-1 Revolution Parka</a>, perfect for covering post-swim or wearing pitch-side if you don&#8217;t mind the *gulp* £349 price tag. And yep, Red are indeed a Devon brand!</p>

<p>Mitch is looking forward to the opening of two new <a href="https://therockfish.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rockfish </a>restaurants in Devon in Spring 2023, at Topsham (in the old L&#8217;Estuaire) and Salcombe. Mitch is all about sustainably sourced fish, so much so he even has his own fishing boat. I bought some sole from their Rockfish-at-home online seafood market for a dinner party and it&#8217;s restaurant standard. What to buy fish fan dinner guests if you want to go up in their estimation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">New coffee and cakery for Bideford&#8217;s Mill Street</h2>

<p>New for Bideford is the dog-friendly <a href="https://www.facebook.com/bestcafeindevon" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Café Fletcher</a> on Mill Street, a sister for the highly-rated Boutport Café in Barnstaple. Known for their excellent brekkies and homemade cakes and doughnuts, their speciality is their Devon cream tea with homemade scones, including their unique lemon drizzle scone. Owner Martin is mulling opening a third eatery but not sure where. If you want one near you, go bend Martin&#8217;s ear over a festive chai latte, pronto.</p>

<p>Remember <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Lulusthebakery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lulu&#8217;s Bakery</a> who scooped a Muddy award in 2021? Back then her beautiful bake business was all online, now she&#8217;s just opened a daytime microbakery in Plympton, where you can swing by for coffee, bagels, and the most incredible bespoke cakes, ranging from occasion cakes to hampers which make fabulous Xmas gifts. She&#8217;s also running super-cute Saturday morning North Pole kids&#8217; workshops where they can add to the Xmas effort making festive cupcakes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">New chef for Dartington&#8217;s White Hart</h2>

<p><a href="https://www.dartington.org/visit/food-drink/white-hart/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The White Hart at Dartington Hall</a> known for its local menu and sustainable ethos, has a new chef Adam Page. Adam comes with a huge amount of experience from fine-dining Michelin standard at Burgh Island Hotel in Bigbury-on-Sea. He&#8217;s introduced a new menu, with (being a new dad himself) a kids&#8217; menu with small portions, and has an eye on upping up the cosiness of the eatery&#8217;s interior while staying true to its Medieval roots. Adam&#8217;s arrival also heralds their return to a seven-day a week food service, so good news all round.</p>

There&#8217;s also a new Devon Food &amp; Drink Market, where you can buy and sample local goodies, with a new programme of foodie talks and demos, hosted by Telegraph wine guru, Susy Atkins and food writer Mark Diacono of River Cottage and Otter Farm fame.
