The Rising Sun, Lynmouth

An iconic Devon pub and 14-room boutique hotel on the North Devon coast with a private cottage good enough for a Romatic poet.

Here be smugglers! Dating back to the 14th century, this old-worlde thatched pub overlooking Lynmouth harbour was once the haunt of bootleggers. Now, it’s locals and in-the-know holiday-makers who flock here. And you should too as this family-run hostelry brims with history and stunning coast views, best enjoyed while sinking a pint of local ale and watching the sun set over the ocean.

Come just for the fabulous comfort food, and to tuck into the fresh catch of the day or a slap-up Sunday lunch. Better still, stay longer and book into one of 14 boutique rooms. They’re all en suite and freshly refurbished while retaining the low ceilings and characterful sloping floors that make it an evocative base for exploring North Devon.

Walk the Valley of the Rocks where you can take in panoramic sea views while dodging the wild goats, or head inland to Watersmeet to see the stunning waterfall. Not for nothing is this area nicknamed Dartmoor on Sea, and the reason why you’ll find a warm welcome for families and dogs. The pub is located close to the entrance of the town’s funicular cliff railway, so don’t miss a breathtaking ride up to Lynton on the clifftop above.

If it’s just the two of you, book Shelley’s Cottage named for the Romantic poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley who honeymooned here with his first wife, Harriet, in 1812. With its own sitting room and a private garden from where the view of coast and cliffs are sublime – it might not inspire you to poetry but we think you’ll love the half-tester bed!
