It's the time of year for embracing our living rooms, so here's 6 ways to add extra cosiness.
Rake the last of the leaves onto the compost and give up on the garden for now (we’re such a fickle bunch), it’s time to reconnect with the living room. Tis the season for snuggling, having friends and family around and embracing the changing seasons. Are you ready for it?
I’m seriously coveting one or two pieces for a quick and colourful update of my living room, at Totnes institution Little Blue Budgie, on the High Street. If you’ve not been to this lifestyle treasure trove, this is the time of year to do it. The shop not only looks as eclectically fab as always, you’ll probably find a Christmas gift or two, while you’re there.
The thing I love about owners Graham and Penny is that they don’t take themselves too seriously in the interiors world. And by that I mean they don’t necessarily follow a theme to the letter, or jump on the trend bandwagon. They love a combination, colour and fun and, quite simply, if they find something they like, they stock it.
That said, whether they admit to it or not, they have brilliant taste and an eye for a stand-out piece and let’s not forget that these guys were championing the trend for Scandi-inspired interiors way ahead of anyone else. Can you imagine a little Devon shop selling Scandi pieces to Scandinavians? Oh yeah, you couldn’t make it up.
So, here’s a few of my favourite things in store and online now, along with some simple ways to make winter indoors a cosy one.
1 / Don’t play the bored game
It’s hard at this time of year because telly is so damn good, but if you’re planning on a bit of a digital detox this autumn and the artificial glow of the TV is, frankly, spoiling the ambience, then make sure there’s plenty of entertainment at hand. A beautiful tome for the coffee table, maybe, or a nostalgic board game or two will do the trick nicely, keep guests happy and look pretty, too.
2 / Plump for comfort
Where do you sit on the cushion debate? All the men in my life think they’re pointless pieces that take up valuable sofa space; all the women in my life can’t get enough of ’em. It’s bad news for Mr Muddy because I think there’s always room for another cushion and, besides, it’s the easiest way to update a space.
3 / Candles
Ooh, is there anything more cosy and wintry than the glow of a flickering candle? If you’re anything like me, you’ll go through a few in the coming months.
4 / It’s box-set season
And a box-set requires onesies, mugs of hot chocolate overflowing with marshmallows and a tv-dinner on the lap. Oh come on, don’t pretend I didn’t just describe a standard evening round your gaff, no judging here!
5 / Shades
Let’s face it, the lights are going to be on from now, pretty much until spring, so make it as moody as possible for maximum warmth. You’ve gotta love a statement shade and you can go so many ways with this one. Whether you choose flamboyant and feathery, a designer classic, vibrant or a nod to nature.
6 / Throws
Saving the snuggliest one for last. Some throws look the part slung over the sofa but don’t deliver on cosiness. Others you could wrap yourself up in and treat like a child’s well-worn blankie, but the trouble is they look like one, too. This one’s the best of both worlds and comes in very cool retro gold and lime colour ways.
