<p>A big hand (with mitts on of course) for Garden Rosemoor! They&#8217;ve out-done themselves with their stunning <a href="https://www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/rosemoor/whats-on/rosemoor-glow">RHS Glow</a> illuminations this year. The light trail for their seventh year is the longest ever, taking you down from the entrance beneath the prettily-lit underpass into Lady Anne&#8217;s arboretum.&nbsp;Wandering through the magical grottos and under a rainbow-coloured tree canopies is a fast-track to <em>all</em> the festive feels. Here&#8217;s why we think you should put it on your hitlist.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-1-winter-wellness">1/ Winter wellness</h2>

<p>Who doesn&#8217;t need a little more light in their life at this dark time of year? It&#8217;s total spirit-lifter, out in the cold air, enjoying all the childlike wonder of a Christmas tree except, walking among the baubles and ornaments, you almost feel like you&#8217;re part of the tree! The atmospheric movie music (we recognised the sci-fi sounds of <em>Arrival </em>with this display) makes it even more immersive and, as far as winter wellness goes, it&#8217;s way less painful than an ice bath.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-2-family-time">2/ Family time </h2>

<p>You can&#8217;t beat it for a cross-generational get-together. You can go at your own pace, and there are lots of helpful stewards and seats en route, so older relatives can take a breather. It feels busy and communal, but never rushed.</p>

<p>Kids find it really exciting, and will enjoy meeting the fairy-lit life-size fairy who&#8217;s wandering around saying hello, and of course &#8211; the sparkly marshmallow-covered hot chocolate from the Shepherd&#8217;s Rest takeaway. </p>

<p>Call me David Bailey! Yup, I was super-impressed with how well the lights photographed, even on my camera-phone. Light images can often just come out as disappointing fuzzy pinpricks, but &#8211; maybe because of the artistry, the way the ground is cleverly lit, and how they&#8217;ve maximised reflections in the lake &#8211; all your pictures will pop. </p>

<p>There are lots of selfie spots, including a giant lit star and picture frames &#8211; a great way to bond and make memories. A tell of how much everyone is enjoying themselves is the kindness: people waiting patiently, and unsolicited offering to take snaps so the photographer in the family could step in too. How Christmas should be &#8211; bringing out the best in everybody.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-4-garden-magic">4/ Garden magic</h2>

<p>If you love plants, then there are plenty of treats for gardeners, including the up-lit culms of a giant golden bamboo, the stumpery, a gully and waterfall, and the beautiful shapes made by the branches of the oak trees. If you&#8217;re familiar with Rosemoor, it&#8217;s all part of the fun, recognising you&#8217;ve arrived in the familiar Potager or the Rose Garden, but in a whole new, erm, light.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-5-tradition">5/ Tradition</h2>

<p>Let&#8217;s face it, there aren&#8217;t many Christmas activities that don&#8217;t involve stuffing yourself silly, and then falling asleep on the sofa. Add it to the Boxing Day walk and fancy-dress sea dip and create a wholesome new tradition to add to the list.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-6-xmas-shopping">6/ Xmas shopping    </h2>

<p>The fun doesn&#8217;t end when the trail stops, as the Rosemoor shop and garden centre is open for a spot of Christmas gift-hunting. I bought some lovely Emma Bridgewater tissue wrapping paper, and a paperback book of festive ghost stories. You can also buy garden gizmos, plants, Xmas decs, homeware and smells. Always good to get one or two more ticked off the list!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-7-sculpture-culture">7/ Sculpture culture</h2>

<p>RHS Glow coincides with the annual <a href="https://www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/rosemoor/whats-on/winter-sculpture-exhibition" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Winter Sculpture</a> exhibition, which has 200+ artworks on display. Many have been lit as part of the light trail, either to create magical silhouettes or to be viewed from stations along the fabulous topiary pillars. It&#8217;s beautifully done &#8211; as good as a gallery, for your own private moment of wonder. <em>Until 31 January 2025</em>, and the <em>Living Sculpture Weekend 25 and 26 January 2025</em>.</p>

<p>We wandered around scoffing on tasty takeaway pasties and hot dogs, but I did look enviously in at the Garden Restaurant where people were tucking into a <a href="https://www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/rosemoor/food-drink/glow" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Glow Supper</a>, tasty pies and desserts of Basque Cheesecake and gooey chocolate brownies. I might have to go back just for the Festive Afternoon Tea, but you get booking! <em>£20 for two courses.</em></p>
