<p>Nestled deep in the North Devon countryside near the sleepy village of Chittlehamholt, The Mole Resort takes its name from the pretty River Mole (you’ll spot it winding through the valley as you drive in) and delivers exactly the kind of fresh-air, big-sky escape families dream about. A sweeping driveway leads you into 125 acres of rolling countryside, where wildlife roams freely and the views across the Mole Valley are genuinely jaw-dropping.</p>

<p>The heart of the resort is ‘The Hub’ &#8211; part laid-back clubhouse, part family command centre. It’s where you check in, book activities and inevitably end up lingering over coffee, cocktails or a quick bite while the kids disappear into the games room. Think pool tables, table tennis, board games and table football, all wrapped up in a buzzy, family-friendly atmosphere that feels relaxed rather than chaotic.</p>



<p>Most of the indoor activities happen here too, from pottery painting and clay modelling to mini-archery and family quiz nights, plus there’s a handy on-site shop stocking all the essentials you forgot to pack.</p>

<p>Step away from The Hub though and everything slows right down. The grounds are wonderfully peaceful, with accommodation scattered thoughtfully across the estate. There’s a lovely mix of traditional Manor House rooms alongside contemporary lodges and self-catering cottages, all designed to make the most of those ridiculously gorgeous countryside views.</p>

<p>We stayed in one of the Valley View Lodges and honestly, it was hard to fault. Flooded with natural light and perfectly positioned to soak up the surrounding scenery, it somehow managed to feel both connected to the resort and blissfully secluded.</p>



<p>Inside, the lodge was seriously spacious &#8211; ideal for family stays where everyone inevitably arrives with half the house in tow. The master bedroom came with a large ensuite and cleverly designed storage, while the huge open-plan kitchen and living area had everything needed for an easy, comfortable stay. There was even plenty of room in the hallway for the mountain of muddy shoes, coats and assorted kid paraphernalia that seems to multiply overnight.</p>

<p>The real showstopper though? The outdoor deck. Both bedrooms and the living area opened onto a private balcony complete with dining table, countryside views and &#8211; crucially &#8211; a hot tub. And few things beat sinking into bubbling water with a cold glass of something once the kids are finally asleep.</p>



<p>Within hours of arriving we’d already spotted deer, foxes, rabbits and endless birdlife from the balcony. The children were absolutely beside themselves.</p>

<p>There’s no getting around it: The Mole absolutely nails the family brief. If your children thrive on being busy, they’ll be in heaven here.</p>

<p>From mini-archery and pottery painting to seasonal workshops and clay modelling, there’s a packed programme of activities running throughout the day, while the games room and family quiz nights are an easy win for downtime.</p>

<p>Outside, things get even better. The resort offers more than 40 outdoor activities including cycling tours, guided nature walks, fishing, horse riding and wildlife watching, alongside tennis courts, pickleball, foot golf and disc golf. There’s also a brilliant playground with sweeping valley views that parents will appreciate almost as much as the kids.</p>



<p>And then there are the pools. Two of them. One indoor, one outdoor, both hugely popular with families &#8211; plus a surprisingly well-equipped gym for anyone feeling ambitious enough to work out on holiday.</p>

<p>Food-wise, The Mole has things well covered. The on-site restaurant beside the Manor House serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in a relaxed country-house setting overlooking the grounds.</p>



<p>Our first evening meal felt wonderfully indulgent after a full day outdoors, but the beauty of lodge life is having options. The fully equipped kitchen made breakfasts, snacks and easy family suppers refreshingly stress-free &#8211; particularly handy if you’re travelling with younger children and operating around bedtime diplomacy.</p>

<p>While you could happily stay put for an entire weekend, the surrounding area is well worth exploring too. Chittlehamholt is just a short stroll away, while nearby Chittlehampton &#8211; around a 10-minute drive &#8211; has a lovely village pub, a beautiful church and a shop selling dangerously good homemade cakes and savoury treats.</p>



<p>You’re also brilliantly placed for adventures further afield, with easy access to both Exmoor National Park and Devon’s dramatic coastline.</p>

<p>Massively. This place has been designed with families front and centre and genuinely caters brilliantly for children of all ages.</p>

<p>Absolutely. There’s a dedicated accessible lodge complete with roll-in shower, accessible kitchen appliances and even a hot tub hoist.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dog-friendly">DOG FRIENDLY?</h2>



<p>Very much so. Dogs are welcome in all lodges and cottages (just not the Manor House rooms), making this a genuinely easy countryside break for the whole family.</p>

<p>The Mole Resort gets the balance between luxury escape and family practicality spot on. The facilities are excellent, the activities genuinely fun and the staff couldn’t have been warmer or more helpful.</p>



<p>Our only complaint? Two nights simply wasn’t enough. With check-in at 4pm and check-out at 10am, the stay flew by far too quickly &#8211; though admittedly that’s probably the sign of a good holiday.</p>



<p><strong>Good for</strong>: School holiday family breaks &#8211; particularly if you have kids of all ages and those that enjoy the great outdoors. Cosy in winter or outdoorsy in summer; families will love this bouji countryside escape.</p>



<p><strong>Not for</strong>: Couples looking for a super-serene romantic escape may find the family focus a little full-on during school holidays.</p>
