<p>Gotta love a BBC murder mystery! The all-star cast and thrilling plot of the new adaptation of Agatha Christie&#8217;s <em><a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/m0028c7p/towards-zero" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Towards Zero</a></em> has us firmly glued to the TV. We&#8217;re also having fun clocking the local filming locations, many of which are set in Devon&#8217;s South Hams which are, incidentally, not too far from the Queen of crime fiction&#8217;s holiday home, <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/devon/greenway" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenway</a> at Galmpton. It&#8217;s open to visit courtesy of the National Trust &#8211; although none of the filming takes place there. </p>

<p>Set in 1930s Jazz Age England, the whodunnit follows the story of British tennis star Nevile Strange (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). It revolves around an explosive love triangle, a formidable matriarch (Anjelica Huston) and a house party of enemies. So, where better than the Art Deco jewel in Devon&#8217;s hotel crown, <a href="https://www.burghisland.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Burgh Island Hotel</a>, with its jazzy style and unique tidal island location, to play the part of the fictional Easterhead Bay Hotel? Bigbury-on-Sea and rolling Devon fields add to the natural drama. </p>

<p>Burgh Island&#8217;s Mermaid Pool was transformed into the romantic South of France setting where Nevile and his lover Kay (Mimi Keene) first meet, easily passing for a zhuzhy hotel in Nice. </p>

<p>The seawater pool is one of the few in the UK. You can dive into the water from a central wooden platform and be sheltered from the sea by the natural geology. Truly magical for an early morning dip or a midnight swim. </p>

<p>In the series, Lady Tressilian&#8217;s impressive fictional pile, Gulls Point, appears to directly across the water from Burgh Island. In reality, the National Trust&#8217;s Tyntesfield House, near Bristol provided the Gothic exteriors and the below-stairs kitchen and servants quarters. </p>



<p>And if you&#8217;re wondering whether that glorious long tree-lined drive to Gulls Point is in Devon, it&#8217;s not. That was shot on the Badminton Estate. </p>

<p>Beautiful Bantham beach, where the Avon meets the sea, and the sheltered cove at Thurlestone, served as filming locations for some frisky coastal action around the fictional Saltcreek and Gulls Point.</p>

<p>Bristolians may also have clocked Frog Lane and the nearby Masonic Hall near Park Street, Deanery Lane and Bristol Cathedral, the University of Bristol’s Goldney Hall and Tyntesfield House serving up the period backdrops.</p>



<p>*It&#8217;s not the first time Burgh Island has provided the Jazz Age backdrop for an Agatha Christie movie. It masqueraded as a therapeutic health resort in <em>Poirot: Evil Under the Sun</em>, and <em>Miss Marple Nemesis</em>.
