What’s On This Weekend
FRI 15 - SUN 17 FEB 2019
Theatre: Matilda the Musical, Theatre Royal, Plymouth, Tues 15 Jan – Sat 16 Feb
The multi award-winning musical from the Royal Shakespeare Company arrives in Devon this month and, if the hype is to be believed, it’s one not to miss. The story, inspired by Roald Dahl’s much-loved book, is that of a little girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny. Book it, pronto!
Exhibition: Criminal Ornamentation – Yinka Shonibare MBE curates the Arts Council Collection, Exeter RAMM Sat 19 Jan – Sun 17 March
Brighten up the greyest of months with an exhibition brimming with colour and pattern. Celebrated British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare MBE has chosen nearly 100 works by more than 50 artists featuring eye-popping art from film to fashion and ceramics to sculpture. From a sequinned dress by Alexander McQueen to 19th century William Morris Wallpaper, his selection tells a story of objects that refuse to be confined.
Exhibition: Get Fresh, Devon Guild of Craftsmen, Bovey Tracey, Sat 19 Jan – Sun 10 March
A brand new exhibition at this lovely gallery, showcasing a range of fresh and innovative work from emerging makers across the south west. You’ll be able to view ceramics, jewellery, glass and woven textiles among the exhibits, and most importantly, you’ll be supporting these newbies as they set out to carve a name for themselves.
Talk: Jason Donovan and His Amazing Mid-Life Crisis, RHS Rosemoor, Sat 16 Feb
As if Martin Kemp earlier in the month wasn’t enough of a throwback, we’re also being treated to a visit from Scott from Neighbours. Celebrating his 50th birthday (err, how?!), this autobiographical show will cover all the highlights, from Neighbours, to I’m a Celebrity, Strictly… and more. Let’s help him through his mid-life crisis, shall we?
