<p>Here&#8217;s a mix of natural and manmade waterfalls, including England’s highest manmade waterfall Lady Exmouth Falls &#8211; steep but worth it for the views. Or if that&#8217;s too much like hard work, head for Clampitt Falls to visit the base of the Lady Exmouth Waterfalls, plunging 70m into ancient woodland. There are also seven lakes with walking routes around them, plus a kids&#8217; playground and café. New for summer 2023 are running guided waterfall history walks telling the history of how Lady Exmouth had the waterfalls built by miners in the late 1800s, following the closure of the local mine. Every&nbsp;Thursday and Sunday (£15.50pp or £21 with a cream tea).</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lydford-gorge-and-devil-s-cauldron-lydford"><a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/devon/lydford-gorge">Lydford Gorge and Devil&#8217;s Cauldron</a>, Lydford</h2>

<p>Two leafy walks down a deep ravine (Devon&#8217;s deepest gorge), dripping with ferns and moss. The deeper you go, the more prehistoric it feels, culminating in a 30m gush, White Lady&#8217;s Waterfall, and at the other end, the Devil&#8217;s Cauldron &#8211; a broiling mass of water which you can hear pounding like a steam train way before you reach it. </p>



<p>The watery views and insta opportunities at Devil&#8217;s Cauldron are gained by metal platforms (unsuitable for prams and those unsteady on their feet) but guaranteed to make it all the more breath-taking. For National Trust teas and snacks, park at Devil&#8217;s Cauldron car park and descend from there. Don&#8217;t forget the camera!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><a href="https://www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk/walksdb/426/">Speke&#8217;s Mill Mouth Waterfall,</a> Hartland</h2>

<p>Nestled on the dramatic coastline of the Hartland Peninsula, this natural waterfall is a short 25-minute walk from the car park at Hartland Quay to Speke&#8217;s Mill and the 15m-high waterfall at&nbsp;Speke&#8217;s Mill Mouth. It&#8217;s not just the waterfall &#8211; the shattered cliffs and rocky beaches hereabouts are scarily stunning, created by an ancient tectonic plate collision which pushed the craggy strata skywards in dramatic folds and shards. Stop at the Wrecker&#8217;s Retreat on Hartland Quay for a jar overlooking the waves. It&#8217;s not called the shipwreck coast for nothing.</p>



<p><strong>Need to know</strong>: Free to visit, car parking free above the Quay. Dog friendly except for beaches.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><a href="https://www.beckyfalls.com">Becky Falls</a>, Manaton nr Newton Abbot</h2>

<p>In a landscape carved out in the last Ice Age over 12,000 years ago, the Becky Falls waterfall is an entirely natural waterfall, located in a family-run attraction at the heart of the park in a stunning boulder strewn valley. It&#8217;s 70ft high and over 35ft wide in parts where the Becka Brook runs between the huge granite boulders and onward down the Bovey valley. Go after rain when the deluge is especially spectacular. There&#8217;s also a small collection of animals and talks, from pigs and ponies to skunks and meerkats, plus the Woodland Café and a designated area for those who prefer to pack a picnic.</p>

<p>Arrive in Lynmouth and it&#8217;s hard not to be wowed by the water cannons making a splash outside Glen Lyn Gorge. But they&#8217;re not the main attraction, they&#8217;re to lure you in to the museum exhibit about the hydroelectric station which powers the town, the interactive exhibits (Make electricity! Fire water cannons!) and beyond that a Watersmeet-like woodland gorge with waterfalls and walks. Here also tells the story of Lynmouth&#8217;s 1952 flood disaster.</p>

<p>Next&nbsp;time you need to&nbsp;lie down in a darkened room, don’t – book a stay here&nbsp;instead. Hotel Endsleigh is the ultimate soul-soother, with tinkling&nbsp;waterfalls, tweeting birds and acres of emerald-green to un-wrinkle your furrowed&nbsp;brow. It’s the hotel equivalent of Crème de la Mer face-cream, lemon posset and a week in the Med, right here in Devon. Or just stop by for a cream tea and wander around the Humphrey Repton gardens. </p>



<p>If you’re a&nbsp;garden geek like me, take the tour of the historic&nbsp;woodlands, lakes and waterfall&nbsp;with head gardener, Ben Ruscombe-King. He’s full of interesting anecdotes about the champion trees and the old ruins of the brewhouse, where the estate once brewed its own beer – apparently&nbsp;the&nbsp;workers were ‘paid’ in 10 pints a day. No-one worried about health and safety back then.</p>

<p>Designed by Humphry Repton, Capability Brown’s protegé, it’s designed in the Picturesque style – think Nature on steroids – so he would add a hill there or remove a copse if it spoiled the view.  There&#8217;s also a Shell House, a fairytale building at the end of the long border, decorated inside with shells, conches and coral with a mirror pool in its centre. In a word &#8211; magical.</p>

<p>Located in an unspoilt area accessed via woodland and meadows on the North Devon coast, it&#8217;s not hard to see why the red cliffs and beach on the Hartland Peninsula is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.</p>

<p>A fabulous wildflower-studded walk which takes you from a welcome pint at the Hunter&#8217;s Inn and back again. Highlight includes incredible views over the Bristol Channel to Wales, and Lundy Island. Look out for the lime kiln at Heddon&#8217;s Mouth, and the sight and sounds of peregrines and buzzards en route.</p>

<p>Can&#8217;t be bothered to walk? <a href="https://www.ilfracombeseasafari.co.uk/coastal-cruises/2-hour-waterfall-seal-exmoor-safari-to-lynmouth/book-now">Ilfracombe Sea Safari</a> run boat trips to Sherrycombe Waterfall taking in views of the historic Watermouth Castle, the secluded Lee Bay, past Little Hangman which marks the gateway to Exmoor and the Valley of the Rocks, with plenty of seal spotting en route. Hard to access by foot, Sherrycombe Waterfall was used in the war by German U boats as a source of fresh water and tumbles 30ft down the cliffside near Combe Martin.</p>
