When: Sat 20 &#8211; Sat 27 Aug



What to expect: Located on and around the River Dart in Dartmouth and Start Bay, here&#8217;s a week of rowing and sailing races with plenty of land-based fun thrown in, kicking off with a Family Fun Weekend on 20-21 August, and the anything-goes Kontiki Raft Race. This 175 year-old date in the rowing and sailing calendar is world-famous, with more than 300 races. 



New for 2022 is Seine Boat Rowing, based on traditional River Teign Seine Boats. When you&#8217;re not watching the races, head to the Royal Avenue Gardens for a dog show, stalls, live music, Morris Dancers, fairground games and even a surf simulator. Goes out with a bang on the last Saturday with Regatta Grand Finale fireworks which is visible from both banks, Dartmouth and Kingswear.



If you like a bit of added quirk, <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="The Firewalk (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.dartmouthregatta.co.uk/firewalk" target="_blank">The Firewalk</a> on the evening Sunday 21 August where anyone (12+) once suitably trained can have a go at walking barefoot across burning coals. Yikes.



There&#8217;s no town centre parking in Dartmouth or Kingswear during Regatta week so arrive by bus, train or even better, by boat &#8211; <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="book visitor moorings here (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.dartharbour.org/annual-berth-holders/mooring-locations/dartmouth-and-kingswear/" target="_blank">book visitor moorings here</a>. The <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Junior Crabbing Competition (opens in a new tab)" href="https://devon.muddystilettos.co.uk/wp-admin/post.php?post=44845&amp;action=edit" target="_blank">Junior Crabbing Competition</a> on Friday 26 is now with plastic-free crabbing lines.

What to expect: A week of sailing races, plus loads going on around the town with local street food, live music on Island Street and Whitestrand car park, a dog show on Thursday 4th, followed by an evening of fireworks and street entertainment. If you&#8217;re feeling energetic, join in the 46km &#8216;fun ride&#8217; hosted by Let&#8217;s Go Velo on Tuesday 2nd (E-bikes allowed!) Not to be confused with <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="SYC Salcombe Gin Regatta (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.salcombeyc.org.uk/event/salcombe-gin-syc-regatta-2020" target="_blank">SYC Salcombe Gin Regatta</a> on 7 &#8211; 14 August which is the real-deal, a slightly more serious sailing event with an array of beautiful boats to see racing on the water.

What: See yachts and sports boats racing around Torbay Harbour, along with shoreside entertainment featuring regatta welcome night, other themed party nights and fireworks.

When: Sun 7 August



What: A week of sailing spectacles to watch on the water, including endurance gig racing, majestic Gaff and Lugg sail rigged sailing boats off Appledore Quay, plus model yacht racing for kids, a world championship crabbing contest, all culminating in Regatta Day on Sunday 7 August when there&#8217;s a Tug of War on water, rowing and gig races and a greasy pole, with local stalls to peruse. The RNLI Offshore Lifeboat will also be available to view on and in (subject to call outs).



Where to stay: Stay right on the estuary at award-winning <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Royal George (opens in a new tab)" href="https://trgpub.co.uk" target="_blank">Royal George</a> on Irsha Street, known for the characterful former fishing cottages either side. Want a whole house to yourself, <a href="https://trgpub.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Water's Edge (opens in a new tab)">Water&#8217;s Edge</a> in Instow will do nicely, thank you!

When: Sun 21 &#8211; Mon 29 August



What: Shaldon Regatta is over 200 years old and with 130 events, loads on the beach, including volleyball, tug of war and sandcastle competitions, so even if you&#8217;re not a rower or sailor you can still enjoy the fun. It&#8217;s a sleepy little village, but there&#8217;s usually plenty of off-piste action too, with live music in the pub on the beach, and some pretty nice property porn to ogle if you fancy a wander around. 



There&#8217;s also a party for the village on the Bank Holiday Sunday, including entertainment and a band on the beach with fireworks at dusk, while the colourful Water Carnival when folk take to boats in fancy dress is Saturday 6 August.



Where to stay: <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="The Ness (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.theness.co.uk" target="_blank">The Ness</a>, named for the sandstone outcrop overlooking Shaldon Beach and the Teign Estuary is a lovely Grade II listed former home, yes, it&#8217;s part of a pub chain but the 9 rooms with their verandahs and views are charming.

What: The beautiful fishing village of Beer hosts a week long regatta packed full of events for all ages to enjoy. From scavenger hunts and children’s fun to fireworks and late night dances – there is a family fun day as well as fishing competitions and traditional sea shanties.

What: Based on the beautiful Jurassic coast, Sidmouth Regatta opens with a display from the Red Arrows on Friday 25&nbsp;August – and is one of the best places in Devon to see these talented pilots. Both land and sea events are across the entire weekend with fancy dress, three-legged races around the town, live music and firework displays on the Saturday. Great silly fun by the sea!

What: Back on Plymouth Sound for a second year of adrenaline-fuelled catamaran racing, Sail GP sees nine teams battling in short, intense races in identical hydro foiling F50 catamarans at speeds up to 100 km/h.&nbsp;&nbsp;The British boat will be driven by Sir Ben Ainslie, who will be competing in the UK for the first time since the Portsmouth America’s Cup World Series in 2016.&nbsp;Head to The Hoe to watch the action.
