<p>With more artists then ever before throwing open the doors to their private studios &#8211; 366 in 213 venues, since you ask &#8211; this year&#8217;s <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://devonopenstudios.co.uk" target="_blank">Devon Open Studios</a> is an unmissable chance to meet the artists, buy some fabulous local art and have a nosey around some inspiring arty places. <p>Teinbridge artist Amy handcrafts intricate stained glass but we doubt she&#8217;ll be getting commissions from the local vicar any time soon. The delicate panels look perfectly innocent from a distance but lean in and read the quirky inscriptions, which range from the political to lyrics from the Smiths or a Rihanna song, and they tell a different story. Don&#8217;t forget your reading glasses.</p>

<p>Health is a recurring theme for DOS artists this year, with pastel artist, Jordan Eastwood, keen to use his own battles with mental health and visually stunning black, red and white drawings to bring the issues to the fore.</p>

<p>Inspired by #metoo and lockdown, Teignmouth artist Avenda specialises in portraiture but if you&#8217;re hoping for &#8216;beautiful&#8217;, look away &#8211; she&#8217;s far more interested in representing strength, especially strong women, and we&#8217;re here for it. She says: &#8220;I am getting a bit fed up with the word beautiful. It takes everything away and gives us nothing. When we award status beauty we deny strength and intelligence&#8230;&nbsp;in essence my work is getting a bit weird, but I like it that way.&#8221; Sold.</p>

<p>Bursary Award Winner Claire Willcocks makes her 2022 debut with her emotive and incredibly lifelike paintings of waves, inspired by the North Devon coast. We also love her novel side hustle as a wedding artist, painting 10 minute on-the-spot portraits of couples and their guests. Now that&#8217;s quick on the draw! Claire is teaming up with Northam-based printmaker, Josie Grant, for their first Devon Open Studios event and workshops.</p>

<p>You&#8217;ve got to doff your cap to anyone who finds time to create beautiful paintings <em>and</em> a gorgeous garden (complete with arbours, bowers and a vintage flowery caravan). When cancer stuck during lockdown, Karen took comfort from the flowers she grows in her Lydford garden and the results (which also include pretty appliqué bags) are divine. You get to see the studio and her garden, so double-delights for gardeners.</p>

<p>Fancy a sculpture for your garden, or a bespoke arch or gate? Matt&#8217;s your guy. Award-winning farm shop Darts Farm commissioned him to make the ironwork tree which adorns their new eatery and I can personally recommend as he made a bespoke archway for a giant rose in my garden which has curtailed its rampaging. Check him going hammer and tongs at his Okehampton forge.</p>

<p>This year’s winner of the covetable Joanna Radford Prize for excellence, this North Tawton artist is ‘coming out’ as an artist. One of Devon Artist Network&#8217;s <a href="https://devonopenstudios.co.uk/2022-bursary-artists/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Emerging Artist Bursary Award winners</a>, this former dinner lady turned artist describes has her finger on the pulse of what&#8217;s topical, tackling a range of moving and tricky topics including gender and the war in Ukraine.</p>

<p>Bovey Tracey artist Bridget specialises in cyanotype, aka &#8216;sun printing&#8217; where with the help of chemicals she places leaves or seedheads onto paper and lets the power of the sun imprint the image onto the background. I&#8217;m gaga for her beautiful cyan-blue pictures of wispy umbels. They&#8217;re similar but all different, and look fabulous hanging in groups so dangerously collectible. If you fancy having a go, it&#8217;s World Cyanotype Day on Saturday 24 September and you can join her for a one-hour taster workshop 11am-12noon.</p>
