<p>Quirky but brilliant, <a href="https://outside-devon.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Outside Devon</a> is a combo of daytime café, pottery, skate bowl and a place where, get this, you can craft your own surfboard! </p>

<p>Sitting in a two-acre plot,  this family affair is the outré offspring of a group of Devon friends, including Agatha (a keen potter), her partner Ben, Paddy and Jess (with her brother Ben as architect). Their aim is to be a multi-use space where you can feast on an international menu picked from their farm polytunnels, while getting active and giving free reign to your creative genius. </p>

<p>The outdoor skate bowl isn&#8217;t just for kids, they already have 300 members, aged from 2 to 70, including local Lola Tambling of Team GB fame. I love that you can book for a quick taster or commit to an eight-week course, plus they do kids&#8217; classes. The make-your-own-surfboad gig (opening next month, price TBC) is perfect for a place that&#8217;s a pebble&#8217;s throw from one of Devon&#8217;s best surfing beaches at Bantham.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Morton&#8217;s got a lotta bottle</h2>

<p>A pocket-sized wine bar, <a href="https://bottleshopdartmoor.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Bottle Shop</a>, has opened in a former Moretonhampstead teashop. I&#8217;ve not yet had the pleasure but my Dartmoor spies tell me the vibe is classy, the deli sharing boards delicious and the range of wine topnotch. On the blackboard we have local cheese from Chagford&#8217;s Fat Mouse Cheese, Papillon Gin, Heron Valley, Utopian lager and here&#8217;s a new one &#8211; a refill station for ethically topping up your wine bottles. It&#8217;s owned by Morton locals, Anne Cleminson and Simon Johnson who previously owned Exeter&#8217;s Hour Glass, so you know it&#8217;s going to be good &#8211; but then they had me a &#8216;wine refill station&#8217;. Every home should have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Cosy-cool for The Wighton at Torbay </h2>

<p>It&#8217;s time for mosey on down to <a href="https://www.wightonpubtorquay.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Wighton at Torbay</a> which is looking all sprucey thanks to a £420k glow-up. The lovely old Marston-owned pub, which is named for one of the last Watson-class sailing lifeboats to be stationed in the area (one for the pub quiz), has been refurbed with a cosy new snug with Chesterfield seats, wood panelling and a tasteful lick of Farrow &amp; Ball. On the menu? British pub classics with a modern twist, such as home-made chicken and chorizo kebab, crumbled feta cheese and pomegranate seed salad, antipasti boards, and soy glazed salmon. See you in the snug?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">New vodka tasting room in Kingsbridge</h2>

<p>If you were in Kingsbridge this summer (one of <a href="https://muddystilettos.co.uk/best-places-to-live/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Muddy&#8217;s Best Places to Live 2023</a> btw) you may have spotted the pretty vodka pop-up tasting room on Fore Street. Here you could guiltlessly swig a delicious array of daytime snifters in the name of tasting while the kids looked on, and no worry about being reported to the social services. So successful was the pop-up, it&#8217;s now a permanent fixture and Devon Cove Vodka Tasting Room is open 10am &#8211; 4pm Tuesday to Saturday for tipples, cocktails kits, Christmas gift boxes, bespoke hampers and corporate gifts. They&#8217;re also doing complimentary gift wrapping (blokes take note).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Devon Seaweed Company</h2>

<p>Meet Muddy&#8217;s latest lust &#8211; <a href="https://www.devonseaweedcompany.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Devon Seaweed Company</a>, newly launched by artist Charlotte and husband Stuart, who make the most beautiful prints and homeware from seaweed foraged from their local South Devon beaches. Charlotte dries and presses the fronds, which range through lustrous green to vibrant mahoganies, in time-honoured Victorian tradition. Plus, everything is really sustainable &#8211; only flotsam is taken, the card is FSC-certified, the wrapping bio-degradable and the cards printed in the UK. One more gift ticked off the Xmas list, we say.</p>

<p>Sad news for Topsham&#8230; Pig &amp; Pallet have announced they&#8217;re closing after Christmas. We&#8217;ll miss their crazily-good quality smokehouse burgers and witty puns (especially the calendar with you two dressed up as Brokeback Mountain, guys!) but we&#8217;re glad to hear they&#8217;re carrying on with popups and their charcuterie side hustle, Good Game. Look out for them as Pig &amp; Pallet Events at festivals.</p>
