<p>Ever tried your hand at making sourdough or crushing grapes with your feet? Here’s your chance: <a href="https://www.dartington.org/whats-on/info/ferment-festival/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ferment Festival at Dartington Hall</a>, near Totnes, taking place from Fri 23 Sept to Sat 1 October. This quirky fest is about more than just fermenting for a healthy gut flora, it&#8217;s a combo of cultural arts and ecology and aims to explore the idea of fermentation in its broadest sense – of both fermenting food and also ideas. There&#8217;s loads to get your teeth into, including arts trail and exhibitions, workshops, family theatre and live music &#8211; and lots to do for free.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1/HEY, DJ!: <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.dartington.org/event/ferment-festival-opening-night-dj/" target="_blank">Opening Night DJ</a>&nbsp;– Fri 23&nbsp;Sept, 5.30pm&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Head to the atmospheric Great Hall for and opening night party with the superb&nbsp;<a href="https://soundcloud.com/tofuti_klein"><strong>Drayson</strong></a>&nbsp;delivering the tunes, followed by the debut of the incredible&nbsp;<strong><em>Eclipse</em></strong>&nbsp;installation on the wall of the Great Hall.&nbsp;In the spirit of the fermentation theme, you can tuck into sourdough toasties and quench your thirst at a Kumbucha cocktail bar.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ana Silvera is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose folk and bluegrass-tinged tunes are lyrical and emotive. Join her in the Great Hall for an intimate concert. </p>

<p>We&#8217;re not making this up…a butter aerobics class (literally) mixing exercise, techno music, and conceptual art to produce a take-home dairy butter spread.&nbsp;Bonkers! Completely free, just turn up and feel the churn! You’ll learn about the physics and chemistry of turning cream into butter before moving into a full-on sweat-it-hard to DJ spun fitness jams. Please arrive early if you can.&nbsp;Butter cream is free to participants – but do be advised the tutor will <em>techno </em>prisoners…</p>

<p>A messy, interactive and fun afternoon of wine-making (and tasting.) You’ll get to crush some grapes with your feet, make grape juice, mix up some yeast, and then start your own fermentation. Learn the difference between red, white, rosé wine (and orange wine – yes, really), find out what happens when fermentation goes wrong, and taste a few sips of some finished wines to demonstrate what happens when it goes right.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cook up a stink as part of Chef Rufus Skumskins O’Parsley&#8217;s kitchen crew or bring a pot to bang and ward off evil cakes in this fun, messy performance about food. Famous for creating some of the world’s most disgusting dishes, Chef Rufus might be on your radar from the award-winning children’s book <em>The Rascally Cake,</em> by Jeanne Willis and Korky Paul. £20 family ticket.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">6/ FOODIE WORKSHOP: <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.dartington.org/event/krautchi-sauerkraut-meets-kimchi/" target="_blank">Krauchi</a>, Sun 25&nbsp;Sept, 10am</h2>



<p>Sauerkraut meets kimchi&#8230;This gut-boosting food is sauerkraut’s exotic cousin and this interactive workshop will show you how to make it, as well as coming away a jar of your own krautchi to take with you as inspo. £3pp.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">7/ SOURDOUGH STARTER: <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.dartington.org/event/the-power-of-sour/" target="_blank"><strong>T</strong>he Power of Sour</a>, Sat 1 Oct, 1.30pm</h2>



<p>There is so much to do with your sourdough starter! Come and find out in this jam-packed workshop which will show you how to bake bread in an ancient, yet timeless way. Healthy, delicious bread is available to everyone and anyone. In this hands-on demonstration you will tackle the beast, seeing all the steps required for you to get from bread and water to a loaf of sourdough bread. You will go home with knowledge, confidence and your very own pet starter to nurture and use in your bread making adventures. £3pp. </p>

<p>Brought to you by the current MA Arts &amp; Ecology students, <em>Navigating</em>&nbsp;is an embodiment of existing within a state of change very like fermentation itself,&nbsp; which is a constant transformation and metamorphosis. At the gallery opposite the Green Table Café. FREE</p>
