wildcomfort, Blackpool Sands, Devon
Flip-flops on! Wake up to birdsong and stunning Start Bay views in a unique eco stay just a few minutes’ walk from one of Devon’s best beaches.

Lazy, hazy beach days your idea of the ultimate switch-off? Meet your new coastal crush: wildcomfort. Perched dreamily above the jaw-dropping sweep of Start Bay (akathe English Riviera’s cooler cousin), this boutique, back-to-nature bolthole is what happens when eco creds, clever design and a seriously good view get together.
Tucked behind a discreet green door in a secret Victorian plantsman’s garden (think Narnia meets Soho Farmhouse), wildcomfort sits within the privately owned Blackpool and Start Estate, stretching from Stoke Fleming to Start Point. AKA: acres of unspoilt loveliness and a blissful sense you’ve discovered somewhere only you know.
Let’s talk lodgings. The original Birdhouse cabins (there are two) are just the ticket for romantic escapes. Sleeping two, they’re all about cosy, cocooning vibes with a side of sea views. Big comfy double beds, sustainable craftsmanship, and clever eco-tech that lets you feel smug and spoiled. You have a gas hob, hot and cold water, cool box for essentials (wine, obvs), plus your own separate bathroom and a futuristic off-grid loo. Ooh, and a private deck for morning coffees and sunset swooning.
A little further down the hillside, The Lookout dials up the glamping chic. Canvas, but make it luxe: a mezzanine double bed and a pull-out sofa if you’re feeling sociable (or bringing the kids – it sleeps up to four, ages 8+). As with the Birdhouses, you get your own bathroom next door and a private deck that practically demands a sundowner.
New last year and already causing a flutter: Robin’s Nest. This latest addition is wildcomfort’s most indulgent and secluded hideaway yet – a beautifully crafted, super-private retreat designed for those who like their wilderness with a generous sprinkle of wow-factor. Expect epic views, a kingsize bed, a large deck with shelter and a kitchen as unlike the other birdhouses you can cook up here. It’s giving “treehouse for grown-ups” and we want it.
Coming as a group? Nab the whole site and live your best barefoot life. Spend days ping-ponging to the beach, evenings gathered in the Captain’s Cabin – a communal hangout with a fully kitted kitchen, wood oven, gas hobs and a crackling wood burner. Add good food, better company and a bottle (or two), and you have a proper memory-maker.
And the location? You’re just a short stroll from Blackpool Sands, one of Devon’s most covetable Blue Flag beaches, known for its golden shingle and crystal-clear water. There’s a beach sauna (yes please), a super-stylish café doing ethical deliciousness, and watersports on tap if you’re feeling energetic.
The whole operation is family-run by founders Lou and Tim, with sustainability at its heart – so you can kick back knowing your getaway is as kind to the planet as it is good for the soul. Park up, ditch the keys, and prepare to fall head over espadrilles.
*The Lookout is suitable for ages 8+.
