Flip-flops on! Wake up to birdsong and stunning Start Bay views in a unique eco stay just a few minutes’ walk from one of Devon’s best beaches.

Lazy, hazy beach days your idea of the perfect getaway? Say hello to wildcomfort, a one-of-a-kind, luxury self-catering stay perched above beautiful Start Bay. You’ll be staying in Devon’s answer to the Med, and to add to the thrill, it’s set in a secret Victorian plantsman’s garden, tucked away behind a green door on the privately owned Blackpool and Start Estate, that stretches from Stoke Fleming (where there’s a lovely pub you can walk to) all the way to Start Point in South Devon.

There are two Birdhouse cabins, each sleeping two, ideal for a date night or two. Cosy up in a large double bed with sea views, comfortably cocooned in sustainably designed craftsmanship and all the comforts of the latest environmentally friendly technologies. Each Birdhouse is kitted out with a gas hob, hot and cold water and a cool box so you can make that all important brew. It also comes with its own separate bathroom and a high-tech off-grid loo, and its own portholes and a private deck for soaking up those views.

A little lower down the hillside, The Lookout is also for two, except you’re sleeping under canvas in a mezzanine double bed or, depending on how cosy you want to be, up to four people if you use the pull-out sofa*. Like the Birdhouses, you also have your own private bathroom/shower right next door and a private deck for a post-beach snifter.

Fancy a meet-up with family and friends? Why not book out the whole site and spend your days just to-and-froing to the beach, then get together for supper in the communal Captain’s Cabin – a fully kitted kitchen with a wood oven, gas hobs and a cosy wood burner.

Family-run and created by owners Lou and Tim to be totally sustainable, here’s just a few minutes’ walk from one of Devon’s best blue flag beaches. Blackpool Sands hosts an annual summer music festival, Tunes on the Sands, and is known for its blue flag golden beach and crystal-blue waves. The beach sauna is a bonus and you can eat really well in the super-stylish café, which is run as ethically as wildcomfort, and learn to kayak and surfboard while you’re there thanks to a cool watersports hire place, right on the beach. Park up, forget your keys for a few days and have fun!

*The Lookout is suitable for ages 8+.
