Thatched Tavern, Maidencombe
Maidencombe’s 17th century pub, a locals’ favourite, has new owners and a stylish new look, and its modern gastropub fare the best by miles.
Whoop, whoop! Maidencombe’s only pub has had a cool makeover to match its gorgeous location of countryside on sea. Previously part of the Hall & Woodhouse chain, it’s now family-owned by two generations, with general manager Stephen Naylor at the helm. Inside, you’ll find a cool contemporary interior, outside a decked sea-facing garden (when phase 2 of the Covid-delayed makeover is complete), perfect for everything from morning coffee, to lunch, dinner and a sundowner.
Chef Liam Murray, previously of Muddy favourite, The Five Bells in Clyst Hydon, has ushered in a modern pub menu with an excellent mix of traditional gastropub fish and chips and burgers, with interesting ingredient-led lighter bites and deconstructed desserts. A friend’s daughter is coeliac and she was impressed that almost everything on the menu is available gluten-free, including the sourdough bread rolls. There’s no dedicated kids menu, but likewise everything can be delivered in half-portions for half price.
Stylish it may be but it’s still got that hard-to-achieve welcoming West Country vibe whether you’ve just walked up from the beach at the bottom of the hill, or have turned up in your glad rags with the girls, family or your favourite squeeze. After just one visit, Muddy is already slightly smitten with this place. Go give it a whirl!
