The Pig at Combe
Muddy says: Laid-back, classy, glamorous, likes kids (most of the time) – not me, silly! I’m talking about The Pig at Combe! You know a hotel is gonna be good when a cocktail bar is the first thing you clock as you walk in the door.
The Pig Hotels have cornered the market in laid-back luxe, and this Elizabethan Manor House near Honiton is no exception. Yes, it’s posh but it’s friendly and warm, and above all, wants you to relax and enjoy the many, many comforts. If The Pig was a person it would be Joanna Lumley, welcoming you in the door with a gin and a velvet sofa by the fire. The Pig is a masterclass in period property porn – feast your eyes on those chandeliers and ornate mirrors – but with modern monsoon showers and top-tech TVs elegantly hidden behind giant gilt mirrors.
Come with your girlies for morning coffee or a light bite lunch in the rustic Folly, then wander with something chilled round the kitchen gardens – like Country Living mag brought to life. You can gorge on zero-mile fruit and veg picked that morning and a 25-mile menu that’s good for meat-lovers and veggies alike. Make a stay of it in one of 17 uniquely decorated rooms, or if you’re coming with the fam, one of the larger stable rooms or rustic cottages.
Plus, it’s soooo kid-friendly. They will take littlies off to make a mocktail behind the bar, or whizz them off in the Landy to see the farm animals at the end of the drive, while you chill with a paper. How civilised is that?
Still not convinced it’s one of the best stays Devon has to offer? Read my review here.
