THE PIG-at Combe, Gittisham

Posh yet laidback, rustic yet classy, glamorous AND child-friendly with a working kitchen garden and indulgent cocktails…it can only be THE PIG-at Combe.

THE PIG-at Combe is laid-back luxe done the West Country way. Set in a glorious Elizabethan manor near Honiton, it’s all rolling Devon hills, honeyed stone and that instant exhale as you crunch up the drive. Yes, it’s posh – chandeliers, ornate mirrors, swoon-worthy staircases – but it’s also warm, welcoming and refreshingly un-stuffy.

Part of the much-loved THE PIG Hotels** litter, Combe serves up period-property drama alongside proper creature comforts: monsoon showers, super-comfy beds and tech discreetly hidden behind antique gilt frames. If THE PIG were a person, it would still be Joanna Lumley – glamorous, mischievous and pressing a gin into your hand before you’ve even found the sofa.

Food is the star of the show. The Folly restaurant – a rustic-glasshouse space overlooking the walled kitchen garden – champions the brand’s famous 25-mile menu, with fruit and veg often travelling mere metres from plot to plate. Expect estate-reared meat, knockout seasonal veg dishes and puddings you’ll “just share” (you won’t).

There are 17 individually styled rooms in the main house, plus Stable Yard rooms and cottages for families or longer stays. And yes, it’s wonderfully kid-friendly: mocktail-making behind the bar, whizzing off in the Land Rover to spy farm animals, and plenty of space to roam while you actually finish a newspaper. Civilised? Very.

In short: heritage, hedgerows and seriously good food. Devon done right.
