The Maltsters Arms, Tuckenhay

Riverside pub famous by the flamboyant TV chef, Keith Floyd and now under new ownership. Go for the location, stay for the fabulous food and hospitality.

This 18th century riverside pub with rooms has a rich history, thanks to the flamboyant TV chef Keith Floyd known for the BBC’s 90s ground-breaking Floyd On… series, but since its heyday, no owner has returned this iconic pub to its heady heights. Until now…

As of last spring, Matt Clark and Erin Allgrove are the new owners (they also own the Muddy Award-winning Best Destination Pub 2024, The Rising Sun in Lynmouth, and they might just have found the magic formula.

Blown away by the menu which is positively fizzing with ideas for Devon’s rich local produce and given the pub’s idyllic waterside setting, seafood features highly, along with local lamb, and vegan options. Plus – something you rarely find – muntjac, imaginatively cocoa-marinated with ham hock bon bon and broad beans. This is no ordinary gastropub and this is no ordinary gastropub menu!

Read our review of a meal and night staying in Nightingale, their largest room overlooking the river – one of six boutique rooms. Then, book up, hotfoot it to Tuckenhay and make like Floyd with a large glass of something chilled enjoy it by the lazy river.

Seriously, go. It’s idyllic.
