The Ley Arms, Kenn
A dog-friendly 13th century pub with rooms, which twinkles with fairy lights and artistic flair, serving up a modern gastro pub menu, local ales and Devon gins aplenty.
Full disclosure: The Ley Arms is one of my favourite locals. I’ve been to this thatched village pub on high days and holidays, for Sunday lunches with the rellies and Friday night cocktails with the gals. Sometimes, I’ve just popped in after a walk to veg in front of the fire while the kids rolled around the sofas. It’s just one of those lovely ancient hostelries which our county does so well, and the food is always hearty and local.
There I would have left it, except… every time I go, it just gets better. The same but subtly tweaked, preserving all that 13th century, hound-friendly charm of old beams and ancient sandstone walls, while turning up the luxe factor of the bespoke William Morris-style murals and welcoming twinkle.
This labour of love is thanks to a talented sister and brother team: Karen, who seems to knows everyone’s name and is often seen pulling a pint behind the bar, and Martin, a former New York-based knitwear designer for Burberry and Ralph Lauren, who’s channeling all his creativity and business acumen into ensuring it’s a place you can’t wait to return for a cocktail.
Having launched a stunning three-bed stay with hot tub, Cramwell Cottage, in 2023, they’ve now opened seven boutique rooms over two storeys adjacent to the pub, each with its own tasteful character. Decorated with restored antique furniture, walk-in rainfall showers and very flattering lighting, the names of each are inspired by the beautiful daughters of the local family who formerly owned the local estate. Four are on the level and dog-friendly, including a room with accessible shower while not stinting on the glamour. Others are large enough to accommodate families, and those three upstairs suites with their own private mirror-covered landing would be ideal for bridal parties marrying in the parish church opposite. Opening soon is a small artisan shop – think upmarket Harrods Food Hall style (I joke you not) – with curated local drinks, treats and a chance to take home a little piece of The Stables in the form of their bespoke wallpaper and soft furnishings.
The Ley Arms makes you feel like you’ve stepped into another world – urban style in a countryside setting, with the coast just round the corner. It has it all! But don’t take my word for it, set your satnav and go. It’s super-convenient, just off the A380/A38, near Exeter. Race you to the hot tub!
