The Jam Gallery, Ashburton
Culture vultures! Check out this exciting new contemporary art gallery offering unique, affordable statement art in Ashburton and online.
What do we like about The Jam Gallery? Er, everything. We’re talking quirky, pop art-inspired prints and witty Victorian Curiosity Shop-style pieces, and at a fraction of London prices. Affordable art, people! Much of it is inspired by the local coast and tors, but with a cool, contemporary spin. It’s urban art for the countryside, and we want it in our house.
Newly launched by artists Michael Jones and Glen Middleham in the Gateway Dartmoor town of Ashburton, one of Muddy’s Best Places to Live 2024, Jam is a montage of the pair’s surnames – and we reckon jammy is how you’ll feel if you scoop up one of their artworks.
A trained graphic designer, Mike is the talent behind the coastal-inspired and bloke-friendly Sports Collection prints. Glen is a TV producer (credits include Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway) and his art has a theatrical spin. Take the funky Marilyn Monroe decoupage cabinet, or how about a taxidermy owl? So far, so retro except this 1920s beauty is mounted against an impressionistic sparkly disc night sky which sparkles with the lightest breeze. The detail is captivating, not least in the book-sized diorama of children’s classics, such as Wind in the Willows, or a familiar Dartmoor landscape, only hand-cut from vintage postcards.
Prices range from a purse-friendly £18 for a Birds of Dartmoor Collection print to £2000+ for a piece of original art that would look stunning in your living room. Like the flower-festooned deer’s head (complete with a monocle and jaunty bowler hat), or a 3D diorama of lone kite-flyer on a Dartmoor Tor, with a vintage 1940s taxidermy Swallowtail butterfly as the kite. These are just some of the fascinating pieces when I popped in for a nose – but you can also commission pieces.
Want to meet the artist before you buy? No problemo. Mike is based in-store at Jam, while Glen is in their sister store, the gift shop and retro collectibles store, PAD, just down the road.
Have a scroll online for inspo, and if you’re passing don’t be shy, pop in to say hello. The Jam Gallery is their first art space, the fruition of a long-held dream and they’d love to see YOU! Open Monday to Saturday from 10.30am-4pm.
