The Crown Hotel, Lynton

Proper Devon pub with rooms loved by locals for its cheery welcome, generous portions and quirky murals by renowned Exmoor artist Mick Cawston

Come on in to The Crown – yep, it’s buzzing on a school night, and that’s because it’s brilliant. Locals and visitors flock to this historic pub for its classic menu and generous portions, made all the better by the great list of local beers on tap and wines by the glass. Families, couples, furry friends – all welcome!

Take a perch in the bar or in the cosy lounge behind, and tuck into hot plates of homemade lasagne or crispy battered fish with piled-high chips. And mmmm, how about a sticky toffee cheesecake to finish you off?

Those murals on the walls behind were painted by Mick Cawston, the late 20th century wildlife artist made famous for his quirky dog portraits. No surprise then, here’s super pooch-friendly. The hound can even stay the night (provided you do, obvs!) in one of the en suite rooms for free. And you’ll love their four-posters…

When you’re not drinking in the bar, go drink in the locale which is known for its natural drama. The stunning local walk, Valley of Rocks, was a film location for the forthcoming movie of the bestselling Raynor Winn novel, The Salt Path, staring Jason Isaacs and Gillian Anderson. The craggy rocks and vertiginous cliffs, where goats munch among the bracken, are like something out of Lord of the Rings. Head down to the Harbourside – via an iconic water-powered Cliff Railway if you fancy – to enjoy a lazy day riverside or on the shingle beach at Lynmouth.

A total must-see!
