The Chagford Inn, Chagford
A contemporary Dartmoor pub with rooms serving up a local field to fork, nose to tail menu – a perfect pitstop when you’re visiting the moors.
Looking for a Muddy-approved pitstop to round off your next walk on Dartmoor? Located in one of the moor’s most beautiful towns of Chagford on the NE side of Dartmoor – where river and hill stomps abound – you’ll find The Chagford Inn, a pub with rooms that’s as warm and welcoming as its terracotta-pink exterior would suggest, with a pretty courtyard beer garden behind. Plus, if you fancy a sleepover, you can choose from three recently renovated rooms, all en suite.
The vibe is country but contemporary: imagine a spit-and-sawdust pub given a makeover with velvet chairs and cool local art on the walls, and you’ll get the idea. It has a real family feel, a mix of loyal locals, dog-walkers, out-of-towners exploring the moors and increasingly, folk just here for the menu due its growing reputation as a foodie destination.
Owned by chef Ollie and Jordan who’s front of house, they serve up a delicious ever-changing gastropub menu all cooked on site, with ingredients sourced from local farms and day boat-caught fish. We’re talking succulent Creedy Carver duck, Fowey mussels, Dartmoor beef and venison, as well as a slap-up Sunday lunch, with the likes of cauliflower steaks and squash wellington for the veggies. For drinks, there’s a rotating range of local ales on tap – such as Ottery Brewery and Hanlons – and a wide range of West Country spirits behind the bar.
Thanks to owner-chef Olly’s butchery skills, the seasonal gastropub menu includes nose-to-tail dishes you don’t see often, such as pig’s trotter, liver dishes and pig’s heart. Putting his waste-free ethos where our mouths are and going down a storm with the locals, apparently.
As young parents, Jordan and Ollie ensure the kids’ menu is super-flexible, to suit small appetites and fussy palates, so you can relax and enjoy your meal too.
Do I love it here? YESSSSS! Should you drop everything and book now? I’ll see you at the bar.
