The Arundell Arms Hotel, Lifton

A topnotch English country house hotel on the Devon/Cornwall border where you can eat, walk, fish and sleep, with an award-winning seasonal menu.

Say hello to the original Soho House, an iconic fly fishing hotel dating back the 1920s, sitting pretty on the Devon/Cornwall border. This former coaching house has long been a place to let your hair down and take in the country air: muddy and stilettos. It’s a place to fish, for beginners and experienced anglers, along 22 miles of the River Tamar, to go horse riding, cycling, or stomp out onto Dartmoor. Then after a day in nature, to kick back with a cocktail on an ancient leather sofa, or explore the gardens with its fishing tackle shop in the rare converted cockfighting pit.

Foodies love it here for the exquisite afternoon teas and a traditional home-cooked menu, all properly seasonal and local, ranging from casual light bites in the bar to à la carte linen luxury in the Arundell restaurant. You can even order a bespoke hamper from Arundell’s own deli to sustain you on your jaunts.

When your head hits the pillow, you’ll be in one of 21 en suite bedrooms, made cosy with soft throws, tasteful shades and paintings of flora and fauna. De-frazzling is high on the agenda here, so, instead of a TV, you’ll be tuning into a Roberts Radio and soaking in scented Floris toiletries for your post-walk soak. You can bring the pooch too, as eight rooms in the Coach House are dog-friendly, and there’s a heated kennels for when you want to be let off the leash.

The Arundell Arms is on the Tamara Way, an 87-mile stretch from Plymouth to the North Cornwall coast, making this the ideal pitstop for a week’s walk. They’ll even help with pick-ups and drop-offs. Or just pop in for lunch while you charge up at the Tesla stations. Should you want to ditch the car, Exeter St David’s is just 50 minutes drive away, and they’re also happy to arrange a taxi to meet you. At rooms from £250 per night for two, here makes a very tempting country getaway.

The 20th century’s greatest poet, Ted Hughes, loved it here, as did so many visitors who wrote in the ancient guest book in the library – and so will you.
