Studio Pilates, Exeter

A contemporary, city-centre Pilates studio with 12 superior custom reformer machines and scientifically-sequenced exercises led by world-class instructors.

Thinking of trying Reformer Pilates? The fitness class du jour is loved by the likes of Hayley Bieber and Kendall Jenner, while David Beckham credits its spring-loaded workouts with putting him in his best ever shape. Performed on a machine, rather than a mat, the Reformer-based exercises are known for sculpting Jennifer Aston-esque toned arms and abs, and due to its low impact, high-intensity precision, it’s also suitable for postpartum mums, those with bad backs and as a means to recovering from injury.

Studio Pilates is a global brand which started life in Australia in 2002, and was so popular it now has 100 studios worldwide. Studio Pilates Exeter, its first UK location, is owned by Felicity Kelly, who discovered SP while living in Australia and was so impressed, she traded in her corporate career and launched her own studio on her return to Devon.

Located in a convenient city-centre spot, the Exeter studio feels pretty elegant, with polished hardwood floors, beautifully crafted furniture, and bespoke Reformers, as well as the signature chandelier. With 12 Reformer machines, the class are fast-based and buzzy, led by Studio Pilates-trained instructors. Classes are just 45-minute, so ideal for busy professionals, and include 6.30am starts and post-work sessions. Each exercise can be followed on screens around the studio, with voiceover to emphasise key points, which allows the instructors to provide one-on-one but non-judgy feedback, just as you’d get in a personal training session. Even better, there are no expensive memberships, so you can dip your toe before committing.

They also offer a six-week individually tailored programme for people who want a 360 approach to their health and diet, Amplify. The package includes nutritional advice, a health check and good offers from partners. Muddy review – and toned abs – coming soon!
