Rendezvous Wine Bar, Exeter

A bijou basement bar and restaurant, perfect for dates with your gals or a working lunch, and the favourite haunt of the city’s professionals for a Friday night.

Say salut to Rendezvous, a basement wine bar and restaurant, a hop skip and a jump off Cathedral Green in the heart of the city’s business district, Southernhay. It boasts a a huuuuuge wine list, and specialises in Francophile and European dishes, mostly meat and fish  – with a local catch delivered daily from Brixham. Muddy loves it for its a grown-up vibe and bijou atmosphere. Definitely one to get in your personal little black book, pronto.

It’s been run and owned for over 20 years by Jemma Mitchell, an ex-PR who spotted a gap in the market for somewhere you could get a decent glass of wine. Somewhere unpretentious, where you don’t have to dress up – a home from home for chilling, drinking and grabbing a bite.

What I love about Rendezvous is how it morphs to meet your need. Working lunches rub shoulders with ladies out for a lunch of the liquid variety and come evening, it segues into a buzzing wine bar. By day, here is where you’ll find the city’s high-flying solicitors, accountants, barristers and wealth managers when they want some down time – ie down some stone steps in a basement cellar! Or come summer, outside quaffing and chatting in the walled garden.

J’adore Rendezous. Allez, allez, allez!
