Nymetwood Treehouses, near Crediton

Treehouses rarely come this stylish, or with such incredible views. Put away your phone (having rung the babysitter first), then go decompress in the trees.

Glamping – eat your heart out. We have a new way to nestle in with Nature now, thank you, and it’s called Nymetwood Treehouses – Blackcap and Starling to be precise. And what stylish blackbirds they are, perched quietly among the trees branches taking in the amazing view.

An influencer’s dream, their design was inspired by Icelandic cabins, the type you you see in fishing villages on your way to the Blue Lagoon. They’re accessed via a raised walkway which is exciting in itself, but then you step inside and there’s your wow moment – double height floor-to-ceiling windows which make wallpaper of the green fields and the enveloping trees. Even the bathroom exterior is glass-clad which adds a certain frisson to shower time. But then there’s no-one around to see – except maybe for the blackcaps and starlings.

Owners Cherie and James, ex-Londoners with busy day jobs, designed Nymetwood as an escape for couples to unplug and hunker down a-while. Luxury hotel-style fittings are married with an earth-friendly and local sensibility manifested in the low impact, sustainable wood, local produce and organic cleansing products. Downstairs is open-plan with a giant sofa soaking up the views, and a wood-burner to keep your toes toasty; the kingsize bed is upstairs in a mezzanine where a huge skylight mimics sleeping under the stars. Out front, a giant copper outdoor copper bath offers the chance for bathing on a private terrace with the wind wiffling in your hair.

According to Cherie, some guests can’t bear to prise themselves away, but should you want to explore, here has bucolic meadows and orchards. Dartmoor and its majestic granite tors and wild ponies are nearby, along with Muddy-approved pubs, including The Dartmoor Inn and The Duck at Yeoford. But then here’s the perfect place for couples to enjoy a Tarzan and Jane moment, or catching up on your Booker Prize list at the very least. Here may not be for kids, or for dogs, and your nearest shop is half an hour away (so go prepared), but it’s definitely for daydreamers, sleepy star gazers, and for anyone who want to shed their work gear and just BE.

But don’t take my word for it. Those great arbiters of taste, ie you the Muddy readers, just voted Nymetwood Treehouses as Best Boutique Stay in the Muddy Awards 2024. Two night stays start at £500 (£250 a night mid-week).
