Nettle and Dock, Spreyton

A back-to-nature, edge-of-Dartmoor stay where you can relax in a family friendly oak-framed barn, a romantic shepherd’s hut or lakeside glamping pods.

Seeking a rural rendezvous where you can forget the hairbrush and deflate a while? Our Muddy Herts editor, Katrina, found Nettle and Dock while looking for a bucolic half term stay, and has given here a huge thumbs-up. Offering a barn, a shepherd’s hut and a cool glamping pod, here feels like the middle of nowhere (but is just 10 minutes from the A30), and it’s perfect for family and couples’ getaways.

Katrina loved the barn, the dark starry skies, the Faith in Nature toiletries – and the hot tub, obvs – but if you fancy something really unusual for your insta-feed, try the panoramic glamping pods. Making an easy-peasy change from putting up the canvas, each measures a spacious 5m wide x8m long, and come with a double bed, flushing toilet, power shower, kitchen and sitting area. One has fold-out camping beds for the kids. Although it’s off-grid as far as wifi goes, you can charge your phone and there’s a nearby lake and shared wood-fired outdoor bath to distract you from scrolling.

Owner Ilona moved here with her husband Mitch and two kids five years ago, fulfilling her dream of running a holiday business in Devon. And who can blame her?! It’s sounds like an idyllic place to escape the day job. We love their frill-free approach which makes it  super affordable, ranging from £120 to £140 per night (and it’s a two-night minimum stay not the usual three). It’s also dog-friendly and your nearest pub is the Muddy Award-winning Duck at Yeoford, just 10 mins in the car, along with characterful CAMRA pub, The Tom Cobley, where you enjoy an excellent pint.
