KUKU, Plymouth

A contemporary Japanese restaurant, cocktail bar and Robata in the heart of Plymouth for a stylishly tasty lunch, dinner and takeaways.

TBH, there’s nothing Muddy doesn’t love about KUKU. It’s up there with top London restaurants, and every Plymothian I’ve ever met knows it, so, unless you’re not a fan modern Japanese food, stylish interiors and great cocktails, then book pronto!

We’re talking contemporary Japanese dishes, delivered tapas-style in a fast ‘free flow’ service, where beautifully presented plates arrive as they’re ready from the open kitchen. Mouth-watering sushi, lightly seared sashimi and sizzling skewers, from meat, duck, crab and seafood to vegan and veggie aplenty (plus gluten-free and dairy-free options). Everything feels authentic, without being themey, and the drinks list is huge! Go early to grab a snifter on a sofa in the bar for the full KUKU experience.

The vibe is buzzy and relaxed by day, and glad-rags glam at night, when the glassware glows and the swanky lighting is low. For an intimate dining experience, take a perch at the Robata and watch the chefs do their thing at the grill. The menu lends itself to sharing, whether you’re here for a date night or out with a gaggle of gals or your family. The more people you bring, the bigger range of fabulous dishes you’ll get to try! Kids are welcome too, with plenty of options, such as chicken katsu, to suit simpler appetites.

Don’t worry if you’ve not tried sushi before, or if you feel phased by the unusual recipes and menu. The staff are friendly, super-knowledgable and happy to curate your meal according to your tastes. Grab your chopsticks and go give it a whirl!
