Furzeleigh Mill & Epicurean Devon Tours, Buckfastleigh
A tastefully restored 16th century mill restaurant, bar and boutique rooms offering curated foodie tours around Devon and Dartmoor.
Here’s a stay which should be better known, and if my Muddy-dar is anything to go by, it soon will be. Owners Tessa and Geoff are going great guns, turning this 10-bedroom charmer into hot boutique-hotel territory (and wedding venue). With Geoff’s background in architecture and Tessa’s peripatetic career which meant regularly staying in hotels for over 15 years, they’re nailing location-driven style, customer service and their food offering from the off.
Furzeleigh Mill is nestled on the bucolic Eastern edge of Dartmoor, but easily accessible from the Devon Expressway. Rocking a sun-soaked terrace for cocktails and dining (the table under the magnolia by the hotel’s shop is the hot ticket), Furzeleigh has a welcoming bar and dining room downstairs, and ten bedrooms arranged over two floors upstairs. Each en suite room is individually named after villages on Dartmoor, including some with divine four-posters. The rooms are gorgeously decorated in contemporary style, while retaining the character of beams and exposed stone walls. Insta fodder guaranteed.
With the refurbished Mill Room for dining, there’s plenty for foodies too, especially their new curated Epicurean Tours which offer a chance to sample Devon’s best local producers, including gin-making, a tea ceremony and a trip to a tea plantation, a chance to sample wines in a local vineyard, plus a visit to a chilli farm and Riverford Field Kitchen. Or go for a proper afternoon tea, or Bottomless Brunch, their bestselling Murder Mystery Nights or their popular Sunday lunch. But however you go, go hungry!
