Compton Pool, Marldon

Family and couple-friendly South Devon holiday cottages with heated indoor pool and games room for people who love to play where they stay.

If your idea of the perfect break is somewhere you can park up and have fun without getting back in the car, then this multi award-winning hideaway has your name on it. Set in 14 green acres, there’s so much to do for all ages and inclinations – and weather – on site. Take an early morning dip in the heated indoor pool; pad over to the tennis court for a knock-about; wander over to the farm animals and coo over the alpacas. You can even try your hand at fishing. Just borrow one of Compton Pool’s complimentary rods and head to one of two on-site fishing lakes and have a go at netting yourself a big ‘un. Kids will be kept plenty-busy in the games room, and, if you rent a cottage that backs onto the play area, you can enjoy a sundowner on the privacy of your patio while keeping an eye on the little darlings.

Each of the ten upmarket cottages is unique, ranging in size from a multi-generational Georgian farmhouse that sleeps 10 (complete with Aga and large landscaped garden), to a bijou romantic hideaway for two. We have our eye on The Rookery, a modern reverse-level home with its own private balcony for enjoying stunning 360-degree views of glorious Devon countryside. All are fully equipped and self-contained with their own private outdoor space. Five of the cottages are dog-friendly, welcoming up to three (£30 supplement per stay). Good behaviour is rewarded with their own doggy welcome box, comprising a blanket, towel, toy and extra poo bags, and a Mud Daddy, a handy portable shower for pooches (who knew!?)

There’s no shortage of day trips nearby. Pack your rucksack for a walk on Dartmoor to see the wild ponies, or head to the beaches and eateries at the nearby harbour town of Torquay. When you fancy hanging up the apron, there are two excellent locals with beer gardens for supper and a pint

Owners Paul and Debbie live on site in the eleventh cottage with their six year-old son and their trusty hound. So they’re on-hand should you need them, but not in your face. It’s all very affordable too, with cottage starting at £143 per night in low season (Bow Cottage, sleeps 2).
