It’s rare to find a day-to-night eatery with sea views this fabulous, parking close by and this family and dog-friendly, but that’s why The Bucket & Spade was much missed during its recent refurb. Now it’s back open, with a new chef, and a revamped menu to boot, effortlessly segueing from brunching mums-with buggies, to low-lit date nights.

The big sell is the sun deck offering a stunning view over Lyme Bay which every seat in the house enjoys. Take it all in with a cocktail under a parasol on the terrace or basking under an outdoor heater at sundown. Muddy has spotted dolphins in that bay so, wildlife-watchers, take your binoculars!

Food-wise quality is king, with everything made in-house, with local meat from an Exeter butcher and fresh caught fish from – where else? – the fishing boats at Brixham. The revamped menu still offers all the customers favourites and new tasty salads, local fresh fish and chef’s special recipe burgers – not forgetting a selection of vegan and gluten-free options and indulgent cakes and treats. Or if it’s a Yorkshire pud the size of your side-plate you’re after, then see you for their locally renowned Sunday lunch  – all available gluten-free. The Bucket & Spade is based in a holiday park so also on site is a gym and pool, so bring your kids, or your cozzie, or both, then reward yourself with afternoon tea afterwards. Locals, get this one on your radar for rainy-days in half term, you could easily while away the best part of a day here and home-workers take note – they run a brilliant Work Club with free all-day tea and coffee and wifi for just £6pp.
