Bovisand Lodge Holiday Park, Plymouth

A Green Tourism award-winning staycay right on Bovisand Beach, perfect for chilling and getting back to nature with the tribe.

Looking for an easy-peasy self-catering stay right on the coast? You got it! Bovisand Lodge Holiday Park is a 4-star staycay that sits right on the family-friendly Bovisand Beach, in 21 acres adjacent to the South West Coast Path. Sited just a three-minute walk to the sands, the location is a boon for parents with young kids keen to get sandcastle-building, and paddle boarders with their kit.

Take your pick of accommodation, from topnotch caravans, to luxury wooden lodges and heritage apartments. Families with young ‘uns mostly opt for one of 11 Pemberton caravans (which are a maximum of three seasons’ old) and have the added benefit of double glazing and central heating and which sleep up to six. Staying with older parents or another couple? The two lodges sleep up to six and come with a bathroom and an en suite. There are also three heritage apartments located in one wing of their grand Georgian property, sleeping 3/4. All are self-catering, although when you fancy a break from the cooking, there are two good cafés either side of the bay, for fish and chips and panini.

The emphasis is back-to-nature and peace and quiet. When kids aren’t paddling and exploring rock pools on the beach, the entertainment is walking on the SW coast path or splashing around in their exclusive heated indoor pool. There’s a small play park and free-range goats and chickens to add to the fun. This nature-focussed strategy has won them two covetable awards: a Green Tourism Award and a Gold from the David Bellamy Conservation Scheme, and no doubt the approval of their resident bats, owls, badgers, foxes and hedgehogs.

Should you fancy a day trip, Plymouth is just seven miles away, offering a chance to see the UK’s biggest shark tank at the National Marine Aquarium. Don’t forget your National Trust card, as Saltram House, Buckland Abbey and Anthony House are all a short drive away. We love the thought of a stroll along the coast path to Wembury where you can catch the ferry and hop over to Noss Mayo, or in the other direction to Mountbatten for a ferry trip to the cobbled streets and indie shops of Plymouth Barbican.

Sand in your toes, a cool city close by, and hedgehogs – what more could you want from a Devon stay-cay? Plus, it’s very affordable, starting at just £430 per week in low season. Now that’s family-friendly.
