There&#8217;s no beating about the bush &#8211; brows are BIG at the moment and if you don&#8217;t give them some definition, it can make you look a bit old-fashioned, or worse *gasps* just old. Blame face-masks, Covid, Cara Delavigne or whatever but if you want to look youthful and bang on trend, fluffy and feathery is the way to go.



I know this because pre-lockdown 3 I was brandishing my pale, distinctly untrendy brows at Sam at <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="The Beauty Lounge (opens in a new tab)" href="https://thebeautyloungetopsham.co.uk" target="_blank">The Beauty Lounge</a> in Topsham when she told me about a fresh-off-the-block treatment called brow lamination. 



And while it sounds like something you&#8217;d do to your stationery, it&#8217;s all the rage for beefing up your brows and giving them a slick uniform shape.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">THE LOWDOWN</h2>

Heralded as the ultimate solution for messy and unruly eyebrows, lamination brings symmetry and creates volume and fullness, while giving you a sleek well-kept brow shape for up to two months. 



Sam told me it&#8217;s works on the same idea as a perm, using various chemicals to straighten and lift the individual hairs, meaning you can brush them whichever way you like and they stay put. Because hairs are flattened, it has a widening and thickening effect, so good for thin arches.

The Beauty Lounge is a beautifully bijou salon, with two treatment rooms and a Jessica nail bar, with local candles scenting the place and local artwork on the walls.

As well as eyelash and brow fixes, on the beauty menu are Decleor facials and massage (divine-smelling essential oils), manicures and pedis, waxing and tanning.

This is owner Sam &#8211; she is lovely, chatty and well-travelled. Originally from Windsor but now a converted Devonian, she has over 15 years in the beauty biz and a firm fan base locally. She is also a whizz with nails &#8211; her acrylics are the best, with zero damage to your own nails and they grow out fuss-free.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">THE TREATMENT</h2>



You&#8217;ll need to have a patch test at least 24 hours or so beforehand, and a bit of a pluck and tidy up if needed.

*Sorry, look away if you&#8217;re eating lunch.* First, Sam cleans off any make-up and applies a bonding serum to hold the brows in places which is left on for about four minutes. Next on is a lifting lotion which is left to work its magic before being gently wiped off &#8211; it&#8217;s this that makes the hairs more malleable. Next, Sam pops on a setting lotion and finishes off by applying a tint with a pre-agreed colour. Not too dark, but not too tame either as, she says, it won&#8217;t last more than a couple of weeks.



I&#8217;m told to keep the brows dry for 24 hours afterwards and that&#8217;s it. Very relaxing and it&#8217;s all done in just under 45 minutes &#8211; the perfect lunch hour treatment.

Fiona Bruce, look out! My brows are now so well-behaved I can brush them up into magnificent fans (a bit too bonkers for me) or I can just sweep them neatly across, like two perfectly-trained otters which &#8216;sit&#8217; at a wave of my hand. I also love the tint &#8211; although a bit of a shock of first &#8211; it tones down within three days and it&#8217;s time-saving with the added benefit of making me feel less like a boiled egg sans make-up. 



Good for: taming unruly brows or cranking up spindly thin ones, say after losing them though ill health or over-plucking. Ideal if you&#8217;re fed up off faffing around with tweezers, brushes and want more definition for your face and a more polished look without the morning fiddle. A less radical solution than permanent makeup or microblading.



Not for: a permanent fix. It lasts six weeks to two months so you need to keep it up. The timid &#8211; if you&#8217;re a fair browed fence-sitter it might be too much of a radical change, albeit a temporary one.
