<p>Away from the famous black swans and coastal train tracks, a shiny-new co-working hub, <a href="https://www.thegoodspace.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Good Space</a>, has just opened on the Shutterton Industrial Estate in Dawlish. Conveniently located on the edge of town, its doors are right opposite the bus stop and on the Exe cycle route.</p>

<p>If the pics on Insta are anything to go by, it&#8217;s looking like a stylish spot to escape the laundry pile and *finally* get through the to-do list. So, I packed up the laptop and headed over along to meet the founders &#8211; three local friends and freelance designers who clearly have a vision for the town and its creatives.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-lowdown">THE LOWDOWN</h2>

<p>Amy Beech, Kate Huggard and Amy Walker all know each other from local mums&#8217; groups and via the <a href="https://www.peanut-app.io/">Peanut </a>app, which Kate describes as &#8216;Tinder for mums&#8217;. Two defected from busy London lives: Amy B is a designer for women&#8217;s boho fashion brand, Primrose Park, and is originally from Teignmouth. Both she and Kate, a freelance fashion designer, have retired parents in the town, adding to its appeal. Amy W is a mum of two and graphic designer, who&#8217;s worked with Tommy Tippee and Reebok, originally from Stoke-on-Trent. She moved here from Cheltenham over 10 years ago, and her paths first crossed with the other Amy at the local doctors&#8217; surgery taking kids in for jabs, as you do. </p>

<p>Kate explained that their initial plan was to find an office just for the three of them but finding little in the way of offices, they moved onto scoping a co-working site. Having signed on the dotted line for the two-storey unit (formerly a furniture workshop), they&#8217;ve designed it, painted the walls, hung the light and soft furnishings. They even pilfered rugs and the microwave from their own homes, finally bringing in the trades to put up the sign and instal the electric sockets. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h2>

<p>One of five units tucked behind trees on the main A379 Exeter Road, the ground floor is an industrial-style break-out area doubling as a function room for meetings, their own regular events and workshops, and community hire for things like children&#8217;s parties and baby showers . </p>

<p>They up-cycled the large wooden table, seating 8,  from Facebook Marketplace, along with a couple of comfy velvet armchairs by the entrance for coffee time tête-a-têtes. The contemporary landscape paintings on the wall are by Amy B&#8217;s husband, <a href="https://www.neilbeechart.com/">Neil Beech</a>, echoing the baby-blue paintwork on the wooden stairs.</p>

<p>Head up and you&#8217;ll find three communal desks with swivel chairs for up to 11 hot-deskers, with plenty of sockets and loads of light from two large windows at either end. </p>

<p>There&#8217;s also a loo and a bijou kitchen with worktop space, a good coffee maker and microwave. </p>



<p>It all adds up to a fun, urban space that feels light, airy and conducive to work &#8211; with just enough white walls to feel professional, and enough colourful artwork and rugs to make it feel homely.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-anything-else">ANYTHING ELSE?</h2>



<p>The <a href="https://www.thegoodspace.co.uk/whats-on" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">events</a>: the first Friday of every month is Founders Happy Hour when they&#8217;ll be bringing in local creatives for talks and a chance to network. They&#8217;ve already hosted a gong bath, there&#8217;s a candle painting workshop planned for 24 July, with a yoga retreat and more in the pipeline for autumn.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fancy-starting-a-co-working-space">FANCY STARTING A CO-WORKING SPACE?</h2>



<p>When I asked them for tips for people thinking of setting up a co-working space, Amy W laughed and said &#8220;Ask us in a year!&#8221; adding that they&#8217;d all put hundreds of pounds of their own money into the venture. Kate talked about thinking behind the obvious costs of rental to include building and contents insurance, fire extinguishers and PAT testing. Amy B recommended using Facebook Marketplace to find furniture and doing as much of the work you can yourself.  They all agreed an industrial estate is a good place to look for venues.</p>

<p>Book us in! It&#8217;s not just the space and owners we like, but the sound of the other potential co-workers. Their first hot deskers have already included women and men professionals, from photographers and interior stylists to a life coach and marketing PR. A hotbed of ideas &#8211; and who knows maybe even tech support! </p>



<p><strong>Good for:</strong> a stylish home-from-home feel, good coffee and inspiring company; a professional place for face-to-face meetings you&#8217;d rather not do from home; Zooming &#8211; the downstairs breakout means you can make some noise; creative start-ups looking to be around people with experience; Sainsbury&#8217;s and a couple of takeaway cafés are nearby for lunch takeout; a post-work swim &#8211; the beaches at Dawlish Warren and Coryton Cove are minutes away.</p>



<p><strong>Not for</strong>: on-site parking, that&#8217;s across the road, although there&#8217;s usually space for evening event parking; memberships or monthly/annual hire; Mondays and Fridays.</p>
