WHAT? WHERE?

Founded in 1877, Mount Kelly began life thanks to a quiet act of philanthropy, with buildings and land gifted for education. During WWII, it became something quite different again – the Prep buildings were repurposed and they welcomed evacuated pupils from Plymouth – and that sense of adaptation has never really left.

Today, it’s a co-ed day and boarding school for ages 4–18, spread across 160 acres on the edge of Dartmoor in Tavistock. And Dartmoor isn’t just a backdrop here – it’s part of the personality.

Around 570 pupils move between the Prep and Senior sites, with small classes and a Church of England ethos that feels steady rather than strict. Think ambition, but without the noise.

FACILITIES – LOWER PREP

The youngest pupils are based in The Ark – and it does exactly what it says on the tin: warm, safe, and full of life.

It’s bright, open, and designed for movement – reading corners, play zones, outdoor access, and yes, a mud kitchen that gets a lot of action. Learning here is gently structured through play, indoors and out, with hands-on outdoor learning and riverside exploration baked in.

Specialist teaching starts early (PE, music, swimming, French, DT), so the week has rhythm without feeling rushed. Add in chess, gardening, sewing, tag rugby and weekly swimming, and it’s a surprisingly full little world.

Wraparound care runs from 7.30am–6pm, and there’s even a toddler group for ages 2–4 – a soft landing into school life for local families.

FACILITIES – PREP SCHOOL

The Prep School, centred around Tavy House, caters for pupils up to age 13. It has a calm, settled atmosphere, supported by dedicated facilities including Wortham Hall (a performance space), a music school and plenty of space to breathe. But what really stands out is the atmosphere – unhurried, polite, grounded. Pupils actually say hello. Doors get held open without prompting. It’s noticeable.

Set within the wider campus, it benefits from shared access to senior facilities while retaining its own identity and the surroundings are striking, with river views, open fields and direct access to outdoor learning areas as well as Dartmoor National Park. And yes – they use it properly, not just for show.

FACILITIES – SENIOR SCHOOL & SIXTH FORM

Cross the River Tavy and things subtly shift. The Senior School sits around a striking Gothic Revival building from the 1870s – all stone, history and quiet confidence – alongside modern teaching spaces, a dedicated performing arts space and specialist academic buildings.

Sport is everywhere and a major strength of the campus, supported by extensive facilities including a 50m Olympic-standard swimming pool, indoor sports hall, all-weather pitches and a strength and conditioning gym. Boarding houses are also located on this site, giving the campus energy beyond the school day.

OUTDOORS

This is where the school stops feeling like a school and starts feeling like a landscape with lessons in it. Dartmoor is right there. So is the coast. So ‘getting outside’ isn’t a treat – it’s routine.

The Nature Connectivity Project (with Oxford University) adds a more academic layer, linking outdoor learning with science and environmental thinking.

And then there’s the slightly more adventurous side: climbing, kayaking, caving, hiking, surfing, skateboarding and mountain biking. Pupils also regularly take part in expeditions such as Ten Tors and the Devizes to Westminster canoe race.

SPORT

Swimming is the headline act and the schools standout strength. The 50m Olympic legacy pool alone sets the tone, and the performance programme regularly produces international-level athletes. Not forgetting that none other than Sharon Davies (former GB swimmer) is part of the Mount Kelly Alumni or OMK (Old Mount Kellian) to those in the know.

Football, especially girls’ football, is another strength, with national titles and the football performance programme with Chelsea FC; as well as hosting an Athlete Development Centre for Team Bath Netball, part of the England Netball pathway.

BOARDING

Mount Kelly has five boarding houses across the Prep and Senior sites, each with its own identity but shared pastoral structure.

At Prep level, Tavy House anchors younger boarders. On the Senior campus, four boarding houses (plus two day houses) provide varied living environments, from historic buildings to more modern residences.

Boarding can begin from age seven and with around 20% of Prep rising to 50% of College pupils boarding, on either full, weekly and flexi-options, there’s a balanced mix.

Weekends are active with sport fixtures, swim training, enrichment and academic activities continuing; and with no rigid exeat weekends, gives boarding a more flexible feel. Weekly boarders trips on a Sunday are also much loved.

SIXTH FORM

Sixth Form is where things loosen slightly. More independence. More trust. More space to self-manage. The College boarding houses are home to pupils from ages 13-18 but as sixth formers, rooms tend to be quieter, with study rooms available, preparing them for University living. The communal kitchens and social spaces remain a home-from-home, with ‘older sibling’ style leadership roles developing naturally in the Houses.

There’s also a dedicated Sixth Form Centre and plans for a café – part study space, part social hub, part ‘you’re nearly an adult now’ signal.

THE HEAD

Guy Ayling is firmly in the ‘gets it’ category – boarding educated from a young age, ex-history teacher, and very much focused on culture over noise.

He describes Mount Kelly as a bit like Dartmoor itself: changeable, slightly unpredictable, and full of contrast.

He’s not shy about saying most independent schools are broadly similar. The difference, he suggests, is in the edges. At Mount Kelly, those edges are swimming excellence, outdoor learning, girls’ sport success, and a quietly ambitious push into future-facing education.

He’s also rightly proud of the brand new Mount Kelly Business School opening in September and the school’s research partnership with Oxford University, The University of Plymouth and The Royal Society, exploring nature-connected learning and biodiversity.

QUIRKS

This is where the school loosens its tie completely. Beehives. Sheep. A Bee Club producing its own honey. Eco committees. Coding groups. Mindfulness sessions. Board games clubs that grow because pupils simply decide they should exist.

Then there’s the “Kelly 7” — part Duke of Edinburgh, part Ten Tors, part Devizes to Westminster canoe-marathon endurance test. Not for the faint-hearted, but very on brand.

WRAP AROUND CARE

The day runs long here – 7.30am to 6.30pm, longer with flexi-boarding. But this isn’t just supervision time. It’s packed. Sport, music, drama, clubs, societies, pupil-led initiatives – if there isn’t a club for it, someone will probably start one.

PASTORAL

Support is structured and well embedded, centred around tutors, house staff and wellbeing teams, all working together; with a dedicated Health and Wellbeing Centre and proper calm spaces for pupils who need them.

There’s even a wellbeing dog, Pippin, who absolutely gets my vote for star pupil.

SEN PROVISION

Support is practical, early, and individual. The Personalised Learning Team works across teaching and pastoral care, offering in-class help, small groups, one-to-ones and exam access arrangements planned well in advance.

It’s less about labels, more about making sure pupils can actually access what they need – and grow in confidence while doing it.

MOBILE PHONES

Phones are firmly out during the school day. Prep pupils hand them in. Seniors keep them switched off and out of sight, supported by Yondr pouches.

It’s clear, consistent, and designed to reduce distraction without pretending tech doesn’t exist.

TRANSPORT

Day pupils are well served by a network of school bus routes from surrounding towns and villages, offered on a paid-for basis and for longer-distance travel, Plymouth Station is the main rail hub – around 15–16 miles away (roughly 30 – 45 minutes by car), with direct services to London taking just under four hours.

WHATS NEW

The school is leaning more explicitly into future-facing learning and now holds Thinking School status from the University of Exeter.

As well as investing in a new Sixth Form Centre and specialist art spaces, a developing Business School is also on the way (complete with Apprentice style board-room) focused on enterprise, mentoring and real-world skills rather than purely academic theory.

WORD ON THE GROUND

I met several pupils during my tour – including one who very kindly showed me her boarding room (very nice indeed I might add). I also had the chance to chat properly with one pupil who was wonderfully enthusiastic about life at Mount Kelly.

Having joined at nine, she’d chosen the school largely because her older sister was already there and loved it – always a promising sign. Now a flexi-boarder, she describes it as “the best of both worlds”, though admitted she genuinely loves boarding life itself.

When asked what she likes most, the answer came quickly: the sport and the location. She loves the calm, rural setting and the sense of space and quiet that comes with it – something that feels increasingly rare. She was equally effusive about the trips, fixtures and clubs, saying there’s always something going on and a huge range of activities to get involved in.

Interestingly, one of the biggest positives for her was how organised the school feels. Schedules, plans and updates are clearly communicated well in advance, meaning pupils always know where they need to be and what’s happening next. It might sound small, but for busy pupils juggling academics, sport and boarding life, that level of structure clearly makes a big difference.

High praise indeed from someone living it day to day.

ACADEMICS

Results are solid here. GCSEs saw 41% at 9–7 and 84% at 9–5, while A Levels clocked a 100% pass rate with over half at A*–B. The emphasis here is clearly on value-added and helping pupils reach their own potential.

80%+ achieved places at their first choice University including 49% to Russell Group and one to Oxford.

THE MUDDY VERDICT

Mount Kelly isn’t trying to be flashy. That’s exactly why it works. It’s confident, outdoorsy and academically solid without becoming pressured. Swimming is exceptional. Sport is everywhere, and the outdoors isn’t a feature – it’s a foundation.

There’s a real sense of history on campus – one of those places where you find yourself thinking, yes, this is exactly what a boarding school should feel like (even if your own experience is strictly limited to films and other people’s anecdotes). Then there’s the food, which frankly deserves its own moment. This is less beige school canteen, more genuinely impressive dining hall. It’s good – properly good – and thoughtfully sourced too, with 80% coming from within 30 miles of the school (we see you, sustainability). The choice is generous, the quality consistently high, and put it this way: no one’s sneaking off for a Deliveroo.

Good for: Families looking for a proper all-round school. Mount Kelly is particularly strong for pupils who want to combine serious academic progress with high-level sport and an excellent fit for children who thrive in a busy, structured but unpretentious environment.

Not for: This probably isn’t the right fit for families seeking a high-pressure, exam-first academic environment and may not suit pupils who prefer a highly urban to ultra modern glossy campus experience.
