Top places to live in Devon Tiverton

If you're a townie at heart, this traditional Devon market town could be for you. You'll find oodles of indie shops but you're just five minutes from bucolic rolling fields, half an hour from the sandy beach at Exmouth and 45 minutes from the stunning North Devon coast. Part of our Top 200 Places to Live series.

Lots to like in Tivvy, including good transport links and one of Devon’s best schools. Look to the villages east and south, notably Silverton and Thorverton, if you want a property with land or if you’re commuting on the M5 to Exeter, Bristol or Taunton.

Cool bistro Frou Frou has a great wine selection and quality local suppliers like Kenniford farm and Creedy Carver. For cakes (and the best smoked cheese and bacon scones), stop in at Sarah’s Kitchen on West Exe North. Locals rave about The Lost Kitchen, a rustic wood-fired feasting barn with a pretty terrace overlooking rolling Devon hills at Chettiscombe.

For something more upmarket, there’s the family run Cadeleigh Arms at nearby Cadeleigh is an Estrella Damm Top 50 gastropub, and La Petite Bouchee, an award-winning French restaurant on the beautiful square at Witheridge.

Head to Tiverton’s Gold Street for indie boutiques, including Snob for floaty boho style and Mademoiselle Mojo for beautiful linen, jeans, homewares and Aveda goodies. If you’re after scented candles and homewares, head to The Painted Peacock (they also restore furniture) or lovely local art, Lantic Gallery. For a great range of books – and a coffee and gluten-free cake – head to Liznojan , a frequent Muddy Awards finalist.

New for Market Street is ethically-sourced homeware and gift store, Leela’s, which moved here after 10 years on Magdalene Road in St Leonard’s – Exeter’s loss and Tiverton’s gain.

Tiverton has its own romantic castle and lovely walks and a horse-drawn barge along the Great Western Canal. Tivertonites into body-beautiful also have the Red Yew Studio, one of only two Pilates studios in Devon with the special Reformer equipment reputed to have helped singer Adele shed the pounds. If you like your walks to come with some history, Knightshayes, a Victorian house owned the National Trust with delightful animal-themed topiary, bluebell woods and a huge kitchen garden is nearby.

In the town, it’s £288k, but for a detached period family house with a decent-sized garden you’re looking at £450k and up.

Fancy a five-bed cottage with roses around the door? Check out Uplowman in Tiverton, which comes with period features and pretty walled gardens. £650,000 from Greenslade Taylor Hunt.

Tiverton is home to Devon’s oldest independent co-ed for ages 2 to 18 Blundells (read our Muddy review here). And nearby Uffculme School is an outstanding state secondary. High-performing (and Muddy-reviewed) West Buckland also have a bus to bring children the 30 minutes from Tiv to WBS.

The quirkily named Liznojan bookshop is run by mother and daughter, Jackie and Kayleigh, ‘neither Liz nor Jan’.

Tiverton Parkway is 2 hrs 20 from London Paddington. It’s 50 minutes up the M5 to Bristol and half an hour to Exeter.
