Located on the beautiful Devon/Dorset border, High Grange Devon offers the best of both worlds. You can learn to grill like a pro, or relax, and let someone more skilled do it for you. That someone is chef Luke Vandore-Mackay, former head chef at London’s Borough Market. Luke learnt his trade on yachts with the super-rich, and he has cooked for the likes of Rachel Johnson and Bill Clinton. So, not being rude or anything, but he’s probably way better than you. Not that he show-boats. And his BBQ is a refreshingly machismo-free zone, testified by the fact his courses are filled with guys and gals.

The Fire School is a friendly and informal affair. In just one day, Luke covers a lot of outdoor cooking skills on a variety of grills and ovens, including ceramic Kamado Joe BBQs, a pizza oven and fire pits. Pay attention and you’ll never serve up a singed sirloin again, plus you’re treated to breakfast, lunch and a feast supper while you’re about it. I’ll be reporting in with a Muddy review shortly but you’re in good hands – here scooped Best Training School in Devon and a Gold from Food Drink Devon, and it’s an accredited ICSA Cookery School.

Luke’s media lawyer wife, Sara runs back-of-house and is the brain behind the wellness retreats. Sara’s idea of wellness is eating good food, yoga and swimming in the sea, so she’s capitalised on the bucolic beauty of their three-acre small-holding by hosting all sorts of soul-soothers, from yoga and breathwork to wreath-making.

They also run bespoke corporate away days, wedding and private event catering, and are a location for photo and film shoots should you need an awesome backdrop.

Just hungry for scoff and quaff? High Grange’s feasts won Gold awards at both Food Drink Devon and Taste of the West, so grab your mates and go for a feast night, which happen once a month through spring-autumn. We’re talking seaweed-cured cod, smoked chicken wild garlic kyivs and plenty of veggie choices like burnt pepper salsa, fennel fronds, and grilled cep with truffled parsnip crisps followed by baked Basque cheesecake, coffee and petits fours. Proper local food, cooked in front of you, while you chat and drink wine under canvas around a rustic oak table. Trust me, it’s the hottest ticket on the outdoor Devon summer circuit.
