How often do you resolve to spend a bit more time doing things for ‘you’, only to wimp out when the opportunity presents itself, because ‘that’s just selfish, right’? The kids need their Mum, the husband needs attention, the fridge needs stocking and yadayadayada….

The thing is, when life’s busy, if you believe that spending time on just you is a luxury,  you’ll more often than not cancel that night out with girlfriends, day at the spa, or even a walk and a coffee with your best mate, because it seems just as easy to reschedule.  But, before you know it, we’re already into Spring and things are snowballing.  Sound familiar?

But have you ever stopped to think that you need attention too and that acknowledging the fact is the least selfish thing you can do? It’s actually one of the healthiest. Put bluntly, if you fall down in a heap, what good’s that going to be to anyone?

So, speaking of snowballs (what a segue, eh?), I’ll get off my soapbox and instead, I’m going to tell you about something I recently got wind of that pricked up my ears like a dog hearing the word ‘walkies’. It certainly sounds right up my street and I reckon it may be up yours, too.

Introducing the Revive Retreat – a trip being organised by Devon’s loveliest fitness and motivation coach Claire Morgan-Hughes of Devon Fitcamp. It’s basically the ultimate way to halt the daily grind and press the reset button. As soon as I read about it, I got onto the blower to Claire, to find out if it’s as good as it sounds. Spoiler: IT IS!  So get your diary out and read on.

So what is it?

In a nutshell, it’s a weekend retreat from 26 – 29 April (departing from Bristol Airport flying into Geneva),  giving 11 women who feel starved of ‘me time’ the chance to switch off and revive in the French Alps for a couple of days.  This is the second trip of its kind organised by Devon Fitcamp, having last year whisked a group off to recharge amidst the scenery of the Norwegian Fjords. Bliss.

If you’ve never been, you’ll probably be utterly floored by the beauty of the mountains, the sense of calm and the silence; the perfect conditions for giving your mind, body and soul a bit of R&R, no?

You’ll stay in a suitably Alpiney, cosy chalet, with amazing mountain views, be cooked for by a chef and you’ll get to spend a lot of time in a bath robe and flip-flops, padding to and fro the outdoor hot tub or sauna. Basically, it’s an extended spa day, that’s far enough away from home to fully immerse yourself in the whole experience.

What’s the point?

Well, the point is that if you’re close to home it’s much harder to commit fully to something like this.  When you pack a bag and get on a plane, something switches in your mind and you’re much more likely to jump in with both feet. This, combined with the naturally rejuvenating Alpine air will help you to recharge the batteries and return energised and feeling stronger.

What can you expect?

I’ll say this bit quickly, like ripping off a plaster: you’ll be encouraged to hand over your phone, so that you fully switch off.  Breathe and stay with me: by doing so, you’ll create a greater feeling of being in control. Don’t worry though, you’ll still be able to keep in touch with the outside world every day.

During your digital detox, you’ll find you have the headspace to think, re-evaluate and make plans for the future, whether that’s discovering how to commit to a fitness plan, or take up learning a new skill, or simply carving out regular time for you.

What won’t it be?

This isn’t a fitness bootcamp – there won’t be rigorous exercise classes; you’ll do some gentle yoga each morning and get out for a couple of mountain walks, so you can get some deep lungfuls of air, but this is ultimately a trip to rejuvenate mind, body and soul, so there’s plenty of downtime.

What’s the damage?

For 3 nights in a chalet in the French Alps, meals and snacks prepared by a chef, walks, mindset coaching, daily yoga sessions, use of hot tub and sauna, transfers to and from the airport and all equipment, it’s £949.
