Sneak peek! Sharpham’s new £1.6m Coach House Retreat
Breathe deep! There's a shiny-new riverside retreat just opened in Devon, offering mindfulness & gardening retreats. Fancy a nose around?
If you’re in need of a burnout break this spring, then lean in! A brand-new retreat, The Coach House, has just swung open its sustainably-sourced doors at The Sharpham Trust at Ashprington, near Totnes – a go-to for mindfulness stays in Devon for 40 years this year.
Muddy made sure we got our foot in the door (naturally) and was there to share a glass of fizz and see the Grade II-listed former stable block opened by the daughter of the founders of Sharpham Trust, Claire Ash Wheeler.
And it’s a beaut! Sympathetically restored to retain the old stone and slate roofs, with four wings prettily looking into a central gravel courtyard. Quite the olde-worlde vibe – and retaining the beautiful, arched doorways for the ponies and carriages which were once stabled here.
Step inside, and there are a mix of 18 single and double rooms around the central courtyard, largely en-suite.
Some look out onto the lawns and some into the courtyard but all are uber-tastefully decorated in a mix of wooden beam or tongue and groove and soothing neutrals, sure to guarantee a great night’s snooze.
Along with a modern communal kitchen and comfortable reception areas, there’s a contemporary purpose-built meditation space created from environmentally friendly materials by local timber-frame company, Carpenter Oak.
It’s a gorgeous, cleverly designed space by day and night – with large French doors opening out on to a patio and garden, and a path leading on to the south-facing lawns. (and it’s now on Muddy’s Christmas wishlist!).
It’s not just the Coach House which is new. The Sharpham team have put together a brand-new weekly program of therapeutic gardening and mindfulness retreats, especially for The Coach House guests.
Book in for a four or six-night retreat, and after a spot of morning meditation on a cushion, you’ll head out each day to the Walled Garden to get your mitts in the South Hams soil.
Here, you can take the weight off your shoulders by losing yourself in the joy of gardening, well-known for its de-frazzling capabilities – while sowing, digging, planting and probably harvesting fresh crops to pop in your delicious veggie lunch. All in the happy knowledge they’re not your weeds to worry about.
While you’re sure to pick up green-fingered tips, the main benefit is the chance to ditch the to-do list, and top yourself up with a helping hand from Mother Nature.
And Nature sure is big and bountiful here! It’s one of the most stunning natural spots in Devon, overlooking the inky-green waters of the River Dart which winds around the estate grounds and vineyard.
It’s hard to imagine a more contemplative place, whether you’re taking a wander around the estate’s re-wilding project, a dip in the Dart or just taking a load off under a tree, listening to the tweets of the birds and rustle of the trees. Bliss!
Don’t believe me? Check out this video of the location. You’ll feel more Zen just watching it, seriously!
