What’s On in June

JUNE 2018

Here’s your month of fun.  Flaming June, you never fail to have us excited!

Big thanks to Katie White for the words and Imi F Hughes for featured photography!

Urban Art Exhibition at Caffé Gallerie, Plymouth, throughout June

Ooh. A new find to add to the list of places to visit – a rather intriguing-sounding art gallery/Jamaican flavoured cafe in Plymouth. This month check out contemporary artists Dirty Hans and Chloe. Art and coffee? A winner.

Cookery Courses with Exeter Cookery School, June

pastry being rolled out

A serious array of courses up for grabs at the award-winning Exeter Cookery School this month.  Friendly, relaxed and super-knowledgeable, the team really know how to get people up and cooking! I’ve just been on a course and will be bringing you my review soon, but meanwhile you can get stuck in to Cheese Making, Authentic Indian Vegetarian Cuisine, Chocolate or bread-making if you fancy something a little different – and that’s just for starters.  Go check ’em out!

High Brown Fritillary trail at Heddon valley, Mon 4 June – Sun 1 July

If you’re a secret butterfly lover  (I mean, who isn’t?) or budding nature photographer then this – adult only – rare butterfly spotting info trail is the perfect day out for you this June… It is a bit of challenge but the scenery and “hopefully” obliging wildlife, will easily make it worth the climb.

Rose Festival at RHS gardens, Rosemoor Sat 16 June – Sun 22 July

As the Summer months take hold and our beautiful county bursts into bloom we feel it would be rude to not celebrate the beauty of our fauna. Rosemoor is leading the way with a whole bloomin (!) festival dedicated to the humble rose. There is so much going on there we could easily wile away an entire month but we especially love the sound of the rose inspired kitchen, live music lates in the rose gardens and a whole weekend of flowers and crafts on 22 -24 June…

Opening times and prices vary, check for specifics.

Elvis Costello and The Imposters at Plymouth Pavilions, Thurs 28 June

man playing guitar

Classic pop, rock and romance, this world acclaimed musical legend has performed with all the best and is now here, in Plymouth this June… we cannot wait!

8pm. £60.50,

Let’s Rock Exeter, Powderham Castle, Sat 30 June

guitars on grass

Yes! We love the sound of this 80s throwback festival, featuring some names that’ll make you bop with the nostalgia.  The normally tranquil Powderham Castle will be set alight this year by the likes of Midge Are, Sister Sledge, OMD and a ‘just can’t get enough 80s’ set by Sara Cox.  Rock. On!

The Winters Tale, Tiverton Community Arts Theatre, Sat 3o June

Who doesn’t love a bit of Shakespeare in the open air on a summers night? Add bubbles, a picnic and you’ve got yourself a perfect evening, being entertained by the Festival Players Theatre Company, as they bring their touring performance of The Winters Tale to Tiverton.  With cream teas and a bar on-site, all you need to bring is cushions.  Because nobody likes a soggy bottom….

Grounds open from 6pm, tickets £14 (£8).

Muddy Walk of the month – June

When you think of Devon, you think of coastline right? I do. However right in the middle of all of us is mighty Dartmoor and, this month, we urge you to get there.  Head to Wistman’s Wood near Princetown (you can park at The Two Bridges Pub). From the pub you literally just follow the footpath for about a mile until you find a surreal and ethereal landscape of moss and lichen covered boulders and trees. It’s the perfect place to have a picnic, play hide & seek or just soak up the mighty beauty of the historical landscape that is right next to where we all call home.

Muddy Challenge – June.

rubbish on a beach

If you’re anything like us then you’ll be celebrating the eventual arrival of summer with as many trips to the beach as you can shake a sandy towel at. This month’s challenge is all about celebrating – and protecting – our beautiful coastline and is super easy too! All you have to do is pick up 5 pieces of plastic at the beach –  or more if you dare?! You could turn it into a competition with the minis: who can fill their bucket the fastest? Ice cream prize? You could turn it into art: what can we make with all of our findings? You could even turn it into a game of colour and size sorting – all reds in one bucket, all blues in the next etc. It’s only a tiny ask really, but if we all do it… then wow, Just wow.

Book ahead:

MTV Presents: Ocean City Sounds, Plymouth Hoe, Thurs 26 & Fri 27 July

arena music crowd

Oh my. Plymouth, you’re in for a tre-e-e-e-et! Don’t delay booking your tix for this one. MTV Presents: Ocean City Sounds is promising to bring an absolute belter to the Hoe this year.  Day One sees Ella Eyre, Professor Green and R3WIRE & VARSKI taking to the stage, with Bastille headlining.  But Day 2 is pretty special in our opinion – an exclusive to the region: only the legend that is Pete Tong with the Heritage Orchestra, conducted by Jules Buckley performing their critically acclaimed Ibiza Classics show. Someone hand me a pair of sunnies and a glow stick, immediately. Miss this one at your peril!

Tickets on sale now for £25 per day, or an event pass for £45 for both days.
