SCULPTURE: Textures, Devon Sculpture Park, Mamhead nr Exeter, until end October

Head to the UK’s newest open-air gallery near Exeter, set in 100 rolling acres of Capability Brown landscape gardens and filled with work by artist-owner Philip Letts. Known in the art world for his abstract photography from New York to Beiruit, Letts’ has created two mixed media exhibitions – indoor and out in the park – designed to make you think about climate-change and our often destructive relationship with nature.

THEATRE: The Bodyguard: the musical, Theatre Royal Plymouth, Weds 21 – Sat 31 Aug 

Start practising your rendition of ‘I will always love yo00-ooh-ooh’; The Bodyguard is coming to Plymouth and ex-factor alumnus Alexandra Burke is playing Miss Rachel Marron. Glitz, fame, romance and a quite fabulous soundtrack. All we’re saying is: pack those tissues…

FAMILY: The BFG in Pictures, Torre Abbey, Torquay, until Sun 1 Sep

Whether you remember reading it as a child or are reading it to the kiddies now, the timeless classic is retold through Quentin Blakes unused illustrations for the tale. Set on the backdrop of the abbey we can confirm it will be a scrumdiddlyumptious outing for the whole family. Don’t forget to pack the snozzcumbers!

As if anyone ever needed an excuse to go to the boutique and restaurant -filled village of Topsham, here’s a whole gin flight of them! Grab a map and gin-crawl your way between venues for local gins and Mother Ruin-flavoured treats.

FILM: Open air cinema, Tinside Lido, Plymouth, Thurs 1, Sat 3 Fri 23, Sat 24 and Sun 25 Aug 

Tinside Lido opens its doors to the heyday of cinema this summer with screenings of cult classics Alien, The Birds and Priscilla: Queen of the Desert. Dressing up is optional but encouraged so better get DIYing: that Alien costume is going to take forever to make.

ART: Evolver Prize 2019, Thelma Hulbert Gallery, Elmfield House, Honiton, till end Aug 

Featuring the winning cover art and 49 runners up selected by a panel of editors and other artists, Evolver 2019 showcases the best painting, photography and design Devon has to offer. All artwork is for sale and though the winner has been chosen – Debbie Lee’s Sack Race (pictured) – now it’s the visitors turn to vote for their favourite.

OUTDOORS: Elmer’s Parade and Trail, Plymouth, until Mon 16 September

Haven’t you herd? Plymouth has 40 unique Elmer the Elephant sculptures on parade around the city. Head to to Royal William Yard or pick up a map from the tourist info office take your Elmer-loving littlie to get their selfie.
