FESTIVAL: CredFest, Newcombe Meadows and various town-centre, Crediton 1-23 Jun

Kicking off with a Picnic in the Park, Crediton rolls out three weeks of cultural high-jinks, including artists’ open studios, outdoor cinema, comedy, a silent disco and music. Author Ann Cleeves (Shetland and Vera) headlines the Wednesday (12 Jun) book club session at Crediton’s Muddy award-nominated Community Bookshop.

DRINK: Prosecco Festival, Corn Exchange, Exeter, Fri 14 – Sat 15 June

We never need much of an excuse to pop a cork, but a two-day Prosecco Festival sounds like a good one. Pick your fave bubbly from 40 different types on offer at one of three fizzy sessions on Friday night, Saturday afternoon and evening.

Back with over 40 varieties of local ales and beers, ciders, wines, prosecco and Pimm’s too, and a foot-stomping musical line up including The Trees, Rum Puppets, Mr Tea and the Minions, Firekind, Dr Oz, Daisy Clark, Jake Morrell, Mafia 4, Blues Brothers Collective, The Kaizens, Black Water County and Mammoth. 100% of the profits go to local conservation charity and organisers of the festival, Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust.

FESTIVAL: Altitude, Cullompton, Fri 14 – Sat 15 Jun

Two days, thirty local bands, loads of family entertainment including a hula-hooping workshop, circus skills, and outdoor forest school. On Saturday, it’s a Day of the Dead theme, so get practising with those face paints. Artists include Pattern Pusher, The Blue Tones, Land of the Giants, Age of Glass and Opal Ocean.

DAYS OUT: Grand Victorian and Steampunk, Ilfracombe, 15 – 23 Jun

Pop on your best bustle and suffragette costume and head to Ilfracombe for a week of Victorian-themed celebration including the Friday night Time Travellers’ Ball, a Tea Dance, a Paranormal Event, Teapot Racing and other tongue-in-cheek capers. Queen Victoria would definitely be amused.

MUSIC: Midsummer Operatic Concert, Holy Trinity Church, Torbryan, Sat 15 Jun

How about a soothing evening of operatic classics in a Grade 1 listed Mediaeval setting with music from Peruvian-Italian soprano Claudia Alvarez Calderon and Devon’s own soprano Kathryn Bringloe accompanied by Devon pianist Alex Wilson.

FATHERS DAY: Various around the county, Sun 16 Jun

Seeking inspo for Father’s Day? If it’s a family day out you’re after, World of Country Life at Exmouth have a chance for dads to show off in a welly-wanging competition – the dad who hits most targets on the day wins a bubbly prize. Dads and granddads go free at Seaton Tramway (with a paying child) this Sunday and at Powderham Castle where there’s an aerobatic display over the deer park and very good cream teas too.

 

BEACH: National sandcastle competition, Westward Ho!, Sun 16 Jun

One beach, two competitions (adults and juniors) and lots of sand – where you and your trusty team pit your creative bucket-and-spading in the race to make the best turret/mermaid/lifesize replica of the Blackpool Tower. No stealing shells (or ideas) from other teams now.
