Father’s Day Gift Inspo
It's all about him on 17 June. And we're fine with that. For a day, at least.
Here are some gifty ideas for Dads of all tastes, from some of our favourite local businesses. Happy shopping!
FOR ACTION DADS* (or y’know, Dads who like the idea of trying new things)
The Climbing Hangar
Is he yearning to try a new sport? Or already an accomplished climber? He’ll love this one, then. Plymouth’s brand spanking new Climbing Hangar will be offering free unlimited climbing for Dads coming in with their kids all weekend. You just need to pay for your small person (if they’re already a member, even better!).
SeaSports South West
Fancy taking Daddio to the seaside and sitting on the shore with a picnic, while he splashes about, eventually emerging from the sea looking like Daniel Craig (in a wetsuit?). Hell, why not even join him for a taster session or lesson on a personal watercraft (jet ski), or a spot of windsurfing or paddle boarding? SeaSports South West can also offer a Day Skipper or navigation course for the intrepid sailor, or the opportunity to head out for a tranquil paddle along the seafront. Basically, there’s loads on offer for all budgets, starting from just a tenner, so best to give them a call to book your gift of choice.
FOR THE SHARP-DRESSING, SNAZZY-LOOKING DADS
If he actually looks forward to receiving socks, at least make sure they’re comfiest, snuggliest, coolest ones on the planet ie. made from bamboo, by BAM Clothing. Alternatively, if he likes to show off his threads, rather than hide them under trousers, then this shirt will tick the box.
For those on a tighter budget, Exeter Cookery School are running their brilliant Back to Basics one-day course this month. A tour of the kitchen, followed by some simple staple recipes, delivered in a fun, hands-on fashion, he’ll return to you richer (and fuller) for the experience. Alternatively, if he’s a fan of Indian cuisine, treat him to half a day in Traditional Indian Cooking, learning how to make dishes like Biryani and Pooris. Delicious, Daddio!
FOR THE DISCERNING DRINKER
Wicked Wolf Gin
Gin. Of the premium, award-winning, Devon-made kind, of course! Seriously, you can’t go wrong with a bottle of this distinctive, gorgeous tasting blend from Wicked Wolf Gin. He’s going to share it with you too, isn’t he? You’ll find all the stockists, of which there are loads, via the website.
LITTLE GIFTS WITH LOTS OF HEART
If you’re in Exeter this weekend, make Hyde + Seek top of your list; you’re pretty much guaranteed to find all you need to schmooch Dad with hugs, kisses and cute little gifts and that’s why we’ve just added this awesome store to the Muddy Little Black Book. And if you’re not in town, then no matter – hop online and get ordering.
FATHERS DAY ROASTS
And finally, the perfect family celebration must include a stonking roast. Our two faves – one North, one South, are the Turtley Corn Mill at Avonwick and the Thatched Inn at Ilfracombe. Total crowd-pleasers for all the family.
